Drama Rust and Bone

The film “Rust and Bone” was shot by the French director Jacques Odiar in 2012 based on the stories by Craig Davidson “Rust and Bone” and “Riding on a Rocket”, which were included in the eponymous collection. However, unlike stories in which the main character is a man, the director decided to make the woman disabled. The main roles in the drama were played by the gorgeous Frenchwoman Marion Cotillard and the Belgian Matthias Schunarts. The film was included in the list of films applying for the Golden Palm Branch of the 65th Cannes Film Festival, but lost to the film “Love” by Mikhail Haneke, who later received an Oscar at the 85th ceremony of presenting the prestigious American award in the nomination “Best Foreign Film”. In 2013, Rust and Bone won the Goya Award for Best European Film. In addition, Mariyon Cotillard was nominated for an Oscar in the nomination for Best Actress.

The drama “Rust and Bone” tells the story of Stephanie, a trainer of killer whales in Maryland Park. After an unsuccessful performance, when a dolphin that flies onto a pedestal knocks a trainer into the water and injures her, doctors are forced to amputate the girl both legs. This completely changes the life of the once beautiful, proud, courageous and successful Stephanie. Shortly before the tragedy, during a skirmish in a nightclub, she met Ali, who, after a divorce from his wife and little son, moved to his sister. Ali becomes a pillar for Stephanie.

A boxer with broken arms helps a woman with amputated legs cope with depression and restore the joy of life to her. The feeling that united them is at first very difficult to call love. Gradually, it is gaining strength and becoming a driving force in their quest for happiness. Neither pity nor compassion is needed by both. Only the desire to live, believe and love can literally and figuratively put a person on his feet. And “Rust and Bone” is about that. The whole film we empathize with the heroes, cheer for them, and do not regret, we fight life difficulties with them and believe that they will not only cope with the misfortune that has befallen them, but will come out victorious.

In addition to the excellent acting, I would like to note the work of the creators of the picture. The music, written by Alexander Depla, was noted by film critics - the author was nominated for a prize at the World Music Academy. She emphasizes and saturates the scenes of the film "Rust and Bone." The trailer, which announces the film, does not talk about the plot, but conveys the whole tragedy of the situation in which Stephanie found herself. Of course, this would not have been possible without excellent camera work. The killer whales with which the girl works, despite being subject to any of her movements, nevertheless remain powerful killers. The operator managed to convey this fact so accurately that sometimes it becomes scary for the heroine, despite all the confidence with which she communicates with predators.

The whole film is not a tearful melodrama. The director managed to talk about the love of two people who go hand in hand to their happiness with open directness, without smoothing the corners. The picture “Rust and Bone” was shot in the best traditions of French cinema and will not leave the spectator indifferent.
