In medical practice, various positions of the patient’s body are used, each of which has its own name and clear characteristics. Due to a change in the patient’s position in a special way, doctors gain access to the necessary parts of the body and the organs on which the operation will be performed.
In the article, we consider what is the position of Fowler and how to correctly transfer the patient to it.
General characteristics of the situation
The position of the Fowler (Fowler) is used for operations on the neck and head. The operated person lies on his back with a raised head level and a lowered level of legs. This position provides a reduction in blood pressure in the vessels, thereby reducing blood loss during surgery.
Moving to the Fowler (Fowler) position
Necessary equipment:
- A bed with the ability to change the level of inclination of its head and foot parts.
- Pillows for padding.
The correct procedure for moving the patient to the Fowler position:
- Check that the brakes of the bed are firmly fixed, then put it in a fully horizontal state, put the patient on his back.
- The head of the bed must be raised at an angle of 45 - 60 degrees for the comfort of the operated.
- Put a low pillow under the patient’s head to prevent cervical tension too strong.
- Place pillows under the hands, provided that the patient cannot move them, in order to avoid dislocation.
- It is also necessary to place a pillow under the lower back so as not to overstrain the spine of the patient.
- Under the legs, namely: under the femoral part and the lower part of the lower leg, small-sized pillows are also placed.
- The emphasis for feet should make a right angle for their correct bending.
Finally, make sure that the person being operated is in a comfortable position and check if you did everything correctly.
