Schooling requires children to keep a huge amount of information in their memory. This is dictated by the variety of subjects and the annual accumulation of knowledge. An “intellect card” will help to “place” and hold everything in your head. An example of its compilation, purpose and features we will consider in this article.
Description
Intelligence cards are often referred to as connection diagrams or mental maps. This is a schematic representation of information. In the center of such a card is the main idea (core), and from it there is a branching (tree-like diagram). Each branch can be a reference to a word-concept, event, task, date, etc. Compilation of intelligence cards in training is usually used to consolidate the material studied, less often as a brainstorming technique. As a rule, this applies to capacious topics that have a system of classifications, terms and additions.
An intelligence card is an example of effective graphic memory. It can be composed individually or collectively. For its implementation, only a sheet of paper, imagination and pencils are needed.
History
The development of modern connection diagrams belongs to the British writer and psychologist Tony Buzan and refers to the end of the 80s of the last century. However, this is only an official statement of the method. It is known that even in antiquity there were attempts to schematically represent information. So, the first intelligence card, an example of which dates back to the 3rd century, belongs to the philosopher Porfiry of Tiros. Carefully studying the views of Aristotle, he graphically depicted their main categories, the concept of development. His experience in the 13th century was repeated by another philosopher, Raimund Lullius.
The method of intelligence cards, developed by Busan, basically contains the ideas of the general semantics of the Polish researcher Alfred Korzybski and focuses on the work of both cerebral hemispheres.
Appointment
As the long-term practice of teachers shows, connection diagrams are the best way to take notes of new information. This is a great tool in the experienced hands of specialists and students, which will allow you to:
- Quickly and efficiently work with any amount of information.
- To develop logical, associative, creative thinking, fantasy.
- Use graphic presentations to explain to the interlocutors a personal position.
- Make decisions, plan, develop projects.
An intelligence card is an example of easy and effective admission in the educational process, which requires a minimum of effort and time, but gives the most positive result.
Features
Intelligence cards are often identified with conceptual cards. However, this is a mistake. The latter were developed by American psychologists in the 70s of the last century and depict the relationship between concepts, perceptions, events. Conceptual maps have a logical structure (one element emerges from the other), and connection diagrams have a ray structure (i.e., all elements are concentrated around one idea).
It should be noted that such a graphical note-taking has its advantages and disadvantages over other methods. Its advantages include the structuredness of information and the simplicity of reading and remembering it. Ideas are becoming clearer and more understandable; they can be captured with a single eye. Disadvantages include the limited scope and use of only one central concept.
By age and discipline, the method has virtually no restrictions. The use of intelligence cards in elementary school requires special attention. During such a game of mastering new knowledge, children should learn to highlight the main idea, develop associative thinking, coherent speech, and enrich vocabulary. Therefore, the scale of their diagrams is minimal and expands as the child develops intellectually.
Application
Previously, the use of intelligence cards was found only in school education. Today, such a technique helps not only students and teachers, but also people of different specialties. Communication diagrams are effective in business, sociology, humanities, technical sciences, and even in daily business planning. Thus, they can be used not only for taking notes of lectures and books, but also for solving creative problems, creating presentations, developing projects of various levels of complexity, and compiling organograms.
Compare two works:
- The first example is an intelligence map on the history of Russia of the 17-18th centuries. The key word concept is “Peter I”. Four large branches depart from it: “Family”, “Reforms”, “Peasant Uprising”, “Economy”. Each category also has branches that are filled with more specific information: names, dates, events. This map is a concise, but rather capacious abstract of the topic, which can be used to repeat the material or as a brainstorming session before starting to study a new topic.
- The second work is a diagram of the analysis of human life. A personal photo is placed in the center, and branches departing from it that correspond to the main areas of life: personal, professional, creative, intellectual, physical health, etc. Such a map helps to adequately assess the current state of affairs and, based on the results, to design future steps and decisions that help fill gaps and deal with certain shortcomings.
As you can see, the goals of applying the smart card method are different, but the efficiency can be equally high.
Building Tips
In connection diagram theory, everything looks almost flawless. What to do with practice? How to draw up an intelligence card so that it gives the maximum effect? A number of points to consider here:
- Typically, a key concept is placed in the center of the map. If it is necessary to display the time scale, then the past is placed on the left side, and the future time on the right.
- From the core - the central idea - it is better to divert a maximum of 5-7 branches. Otherwise, the card will be difficult to understand. If the topic requires a larger scale, then the elements should be grouped by some criterion.
- The third point is the logic or sequence of the card. It deals with the relationship of elements. Let us return to the example indicated above - an intelligence card according to history. When branching, the elements are arranged in a certain, not random order: "Family", "Reforms", "Peasant Uprising", "Economy". They identify a chain of events that are associated with the life and reign of Peter I.
- Symmetric intelligence card is an example of fast and durable storage of information. Do not forget about this.
- And one more tip regarding chart design. A sheet of paper is best placed horizontally. So there is more space for graphic manipulations, and there is the possibility of further modeling the map. For associative perception, you can use symbols, drawings, different colors of pens or pencils.
