Analysis of the poem by A. S. Pushkin "Winter! .. The peasant triumphing ..."

"Winter! .. A peasant triumphing ..." - is there a person in our country who is far from this poem ?! Everyone, from small to large, starting from elementary school, knows these lines.

And this is not surprising. They are so brilliant and atmospheric that they involuntarily subdue the reader with their euphonies. Nevertheless, the work contains outdated words, the meaning of which may cause some kind of difficulty in understanding. To clarify and, accordingly, the best "immersion" in the work is to disassemble it in more detail.

Story poem

As you know, the above poem is an excerpt from the work of A. S. Pushkin "Eugene Onegin", written in the period from 1823 to 1830. The author was a true connoisseur of Russian autumn, but he also treated winter with great warmth. This is probably why the feeling of joy and happiness from the onset of the long-awaited winter, conveyed by the poet, is felt in every line of the work. Only one thing ... "the peasant, triumphing ..." instantly depicts the image of a happy man who was waiting for the first snow, with incredible fullness and credibility.

Obsolete words in the text

It is logical that the more time passes from the era of Alexander Sergeyevich Pushkin, the more difficult it becomes to perceive many words. The poem under analysis - β€œWinter! .. Peasants, triumphing ...” consists of 14 lines in which there are at least 8 outdated words:

  1. Drowne. This was the name of the open sled of the peasants, which were used to transport cargo.
  2. The reins. These are the traces that the sled leaves.
  3. The wagon. This is a closed wagon.
  4. The coachman. That was the name of the coachman who ran the mail horses.
  5. Wrap. This is a curved village (bond), enveloping and fastening the sled.
  6. Sheepskin coat. Long-skinned fur coat of a peasant.
  7. Sash. This is a belt of matter.
  8. Skid. The sleigh is small.

As you can see, there are many words that are difficult for modern perception. However, having understood their meaning, it becomes much easier to parse the text of a work.

Parsing incomprehensible phrases

Some combinations of words in a poem can also cause some bewilderment. For instance:

  1. β€œ... the peasant, triumphing, renews his path on the wood” - why are the peasants so happy? If you familiarize yourself with the previous content of the poem "Eugene Onegin", the answer to the question becomes clear. "... Peasants, triumphing ..." I am happy with the snow that had not been there for a very long time, so the roads were impassable.
  2. "... smelling snow" - as you know, the sense of smell in animals is developed better than vision. That is why the horse first of all feels the aroma of freshly fallen snow. And the author focuses on this.
  3. β€œ... weaving somehow at a trot” - here, most likely, it implies a leisurely move of a horse, slightly fearful, weaned from walking on the snow cover.
  4. "... the wagon is flying away" - meaning fast. This is also emphasized by the phrase "... fluffy reins exploding ...", reinforcing the description of the speed of horses.
  5. β€œ... a yard boy” - as you know, not all peasant children lived on the territory of the villages, some were at the court, being children of the yard (serving) peasants.

As you can see, after analyzing incomprehensible combinations of words, the poem "Winter! .. Peasants, triumphing ..." became much easier for perception.
