A bit of history

At the beginning of the twentieth century, the stadium "Union" was located at the place where the Olimpiysky sports complex is located today, where Muscovites made their first attempts to master a new foot ball game. In the Soviet period, this sporting facility was repeatedly renamed. In particular, at first it began to be called the "Stadium of Soviet Trade Officers", then - "Profintern Stadium" and, finally, "Petrel". The construction of the "Olympic", which was supposed to be the largest sports complex in the world at that time, was started in 1977. The authorship of this grandiose construction project belonged to a large team of architects, led by M. Posokhin. By the way, for his excellent work in 1982, he, along with the architect B. Thor, was awarded one of the highest awards of the USSR - the Lenin Prize. In order to build the Olimpiysky sports complex, apart from the Burevestnik territory, plots were allocated for construction, on which were the buildings of the Voskhod factory and the Experimental Chemical and Metallurgical Plant, as well as residential buildings located in the lanes of Topolev, Vypolzova and Samarsky. Construction lasted only three years, which is not so much, given the scale of the structure, and the official opening date coincided with the opening ceremony of the Olympics-80.
