From ancient times people have tamed some animals and are engaged in animal husbandry. But the question is: why does a person breed mainly herbivorous animals? It can be said that it has so historically developed. But in fact there are reasons for this, and with good reason.
Predators have tough meat
Why do people breed mainly herbivorous animals? Initially, in ancient times, man domesticated some animals for the purpose of eating meat as food. As you know, in predators meat is tougher and unpleasant in taste. In this respect, herbivores and omnivores are preferable. And this is one of the reasons.
By-products
In addition, from herbivores (for example, cows, goats, sheep), you can get food without killing the animal itself. We are talking about fermented milk - kefir, cheese, cottage cheese - and the milk itself. Not to mention such valuable elements as wool used for making clothes.
Food chain
Why does a person breed mainly herbivorous animals? Just keep predators economically disadvantageous. There is a food chain (organisms of the next link eat the organisms of the previous link), where the carnivores are on the upper steps. And as you know, when moving along this chain, matter and energy are lost.
For example, to feed (conditionally) one kilogram of an animal that eats vegetation, you need to use five kilograms of corn. For predators - in the same proportions five kilos of meat will be required, which is equal to 25 kilograms of corn! And this is another reason why people breed mainly herbivorous animals.
Moreover, for the feeding of some species, ancient pastures created by nature itself have long been used. These representatives of the fauna feed mainly on grass, hay, young foliage, therefore, feeding them is much cheaper for humans. And as a result, the cost of meat is reduced.
On the example of fish farming
To better understand the above, let us turn to fish farming on an industrial scale. Why are people giving priority to herbivorous fish here? If we arrange all the inhabitants of water bodies according to the principle of nutrition, we get a food chain, where each link is the food for the next. Aquatic vegetation - invertebrate animals - fish. Phytophage fish will be the end product of this short food chain.
And for predator fish, by comparison, the chain lengthens: aquatic vegetation - invertebrates - benthos (those organisms that live in near-bottom soil) - small fish - predator fish. Considering that at the same time, the energy consumption for obtaining the final product is much increased, it becomes clear why a person breeds mainly herbivorous animals (in this case, fish). In addition, they grow faster, gain weight faster than predatory ones.
