Deferment from the army for study: what you need to know

In accordance with Federal Law No. 53 β€œOn Military Duty and Military Service,” all male citizens who have reached the draft age must appear in the department of the military commissariat in order to undergo a medical examination and draft board. Not all of the youths who have passed the commission will be called up for military service. Young people who study in educational institutions have every right to grant a grace period. Consider what constitutes a deferment from the army for study.

At present, training at an educational institution at any level is a legitimate and indisputable basis for deferrals to be granted by the military commissariat. But in order to receive it, it is necessary, having come to the commission, to submit a certificate of a certain form stating that the young man is studying at a school, college or educational institution of higher professional education. Deferral from the army for studies may be granted upon personal appearance at the draft board.

Some military registration and enlistment offices practice the provision of correspondence deferral, but at the same time they violate the procedure established by law. This most often happens when a young man leaves for another city to study without having previously taken off military records. Therefore, he does not have the opportunity to come to the commission at the place of residence.

Now, when the young men finish school after eleven years, they celebrate their 18th birthday (the beginning of the draft age) while studying in graduation class. Departments of military commissariats also call draftees for the commission, but if there is a certificate from the school, they are granted a deferment from the army to study. In the spring call, which lasts until July 15, the guys who are going to continue their education at a secondary or higher educational institution write a statement on granting a delay for admission and bring a copy of the certificate of the exam results. In this case, the draft committee may give a delay until the next draft campaign (until October 1). This became possible relatively recently, in June 2011, after amendments to article 24 of the law β€œOn Military Duty and Military Service” were introduced.

Deferment from the army for training is valid for the entire time while the young man is successfully studying at a vocational school, college or university. But it is worth remembering that every year, before the start of the autumn draft, you should provide the department of the military commissariat, which was given a deferment, with a certificate in the form that indicates the date of commencement and completion of studies, the course, as well as information about the accreditation of the educational institution. Those institutes and colleges that do not have state accreditation for the specialty in which the young man is studying cannot guarantee that the draft board will be granted a deferment from the army to study. Therefore, upon admission, the young man and his parents should ask whether the profession that the applicant wishes to receive is accredited.

It is also necessary to know that the deferment from the army for students can be canceled if the young man was expelled for any reason (poor performance or late payment of tuition) and was not reinstated in the same course. It is allowed to extend the deferment by one year if the young man was expelled, but returned to study, however, a course lower. If the young man has not mastered the curriculum and went to study at another university from the first year or has chosen to study at a lower educational institution (for example, from university to college or vocational school), then he has the right to defer his studies from conscription certainly losing. Before submitting documents to a college or university, it is worth considering whether the studies will be able to do there: for the student in the desire to receive knowledge, and for parents, if possible, to pay for the training.
