The hemisphere in which Russia is located leaves an indelible imprint on its climate, environmental situation and, as a result, economic development. Among scholars, there is an established opinion that the northern position of the country also influenced its political structure. In any case, it is worth clarifying which part of Russia is located in the Western Hemisphere.
West and East
Despite the fact that Russia is fully representative of European civilization, only 23% of the country's territory are in the European part. The border between Europe and Asia runs through the Urals, the Kumo-Manych depression and the North Caucasus.
However, despite the fact that more than 70% of the countryโs territory is located in Asia, yet Russia almost completely fits in the Western Hemisphere. The only exception is the eastern tip of the Chukchi Peninsula, which falls into the Eastern Hemisphere.
North and South
The hemisphere in which Russia is located certainly affects the activities of people living on its territory. Among the most pronounced features of the location of Russia, one can single out a strong uneven settlement of the territory; the vast spaces that the country occupies; wealth and a wide variety of natural resources, including renewable.
However, the development and settlement of the country's space is impeded by the hemisphere in which most of Russia is located, because the entire territory of a huge country fully fits in the Northern Hemisphere.
But, in addition to disadvantages, this situation gives certain advantages. For example, the areas available for development increase with global warming, although this requires some changes in infrastructure.
The location in the Far North of Eurasia gives Russia access to the Northern Sea Route, which many experts consider a good alternative to the route through the Suez Canal or around Africa. Given the increasing danger of piracy in the busiest regions of the oceans, transportation along the Northern Route may become popular among transport companies.
Chukotka Peninsula
Having found out in which hemispheres Russia is located, one can pay more attention to the most noteworthy part in this respect - the Chukchi Peninsula, which is the only continental section of Eurasia located in the Western Hemisphere.
The entire peninsula is completely occupied by the subject of the Russian Federation - the Chukotka Autonomous Okrug, one of the region least populated for historical reasons. The climate of this subject leaves no hope for a denser settlement, because it is in the most unfavorable climatic conditions, when on the one hand it is washed by the Arctic Ocean, and on the other - the northern part of the Pacific Ocean.
Based on all of the above, it does not seem surprising that the population of the region is only forty-odd thousand people. However, the share of urban population is 70%, which is a rather high indicator. Thus, the hemisphere in which Russia is located also affects the demography of the country.
Summing up, it is worth noting that the location in the Northern Hemisphere, although it brings with it a negative impact on the country's economy, also provides some advantages, such as access to the Northern Route and significant reserves of hydrocarbons located in the permafrost zone. On this basis, some experts conclude that global warming could have a positive effect on the country's extractive industries, making access to raw materials easier.
