Clayton, despite the widespread insanity, decides, by all means, to get to the family. He firmly believes that such a sad fate did not suffer a wife and son. A casual fellow traveler and partner in the struggle for the survival of the protagonist becomes a colorful character Thomas McCourt - an elderly African American, a war veteran in Vietnam. Together they set off in search of the Riddeli family.
