Yawned or cried? Why do tears flow when yawning

After a long yawn, some people have tears. Many are interested in why tears flow when you yawn. Often people do not realize that these processes are not as far from each other as they seem. To understand the reasons, you need to consider two processes separately - the allocation of tears and yawning.

How are we yawning

yawning

Everyone loves to yawn. This process is not always appropriate, but after it there is some relief. Yawning itself has a very important function. It brings the body into action, invigorates, does not allow it to fall into an uncomfortable state for a person. Yawning is believed to be a kind of deep breath. In the process of yawning, all body systems are involved: musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, nervous and respiratory.

The act of yawning is similar to breathing. Air goes through the upper, then lower respiratory tract, enters the alveoli, where gas exchange is carried out, and exhaled.

But not so simple. As mentioned above, this is not a simple breath, but a very deep one. To implement it, you have to use many resources. For example, we stretch while yawning. Sipping helps to breathe fully, expand the chest. Alveoli straighten, which allows to enrich the blood with a large amount of oxygen. Many have noticed that yawning helps with stuffy ears, with a regular inhalation this effect will not. When we yawn, many facial and chewing muscles are involved.

Yawning is a poorly controlled process. Often we cannot stop him, which, in general, is not worth doing, because yawning can be caused by a number of reasons and does not always mean that a person wants to sleep.

How do we cry

lacrimal gland, lacrimal canal and sack

Isolation of tears is also a complex mechanism.

The lacrimal glands, in the figure under the number 1, are located just above the outer edge of the eye. Through the ducts, a tear enters the eyeball, which is distributed evenly with the eyelid, at the number 2 in the figure. The inner corner of the eye has lacrimal openings, under the number 3 in the figure. They lead to the lacrimal sac, which is indicated under the number 5 in the figure, which communicates with the nasal cavity with the nasolacrimal duct, shown in the figure under the number 6. Through it, the excess of tears is removed, so when we cry, we need a lot of handkerchiefs.

Tearing not only moisturizes the eye, but also helps to remove foreign particles, and some hormones are also excreted from the body with tears.

Around the eye is a circular muscle. It secrete the orbital, secular, and lacrimal parts. The lacrimal is responsible for the expansion of the lacrimal sac when we squint our eyes.

How are these processes interconnected?

facial muscles

Why do tears flow when yawning, because the eyes and lungs are so far apart? But these processes affect one another.

During yawning, a person needs to capture as much air as possible. With a wide yawn, the lower jaw drops, the corners of the lips stretch, the upper lip can rise. The neck muscles and facial muscles are responsible for this. The muscles on the face lie under the skin, with the tension of some, others can also strain, many different muscle groups are involved.

During yawning, the eyes involuntarily close, we close our eyes. With a strong yawn, the facial muscles of the face tighten especially strongly, most of them are involved. With contraction, the muscles somehow affect the tissues and formations that are next to them. With strong muscle tension, the lacrimal gland becomes squeezed, which is why tears flow when you yawn.

Causes

There may be several reasons why tears flow when yawning. For example, profuse lacrimation can be triggered by blockage of the nasolacrimal duct, inflammation of the lacrimal sac, and a number of other reasons. The total secretion of tear fluid increases, which is why tears flow when yawning.

Depending on the state of the lacrimal glands in different people, a different amount of lacrimal fluid is released during yawning. If the gland is somewhat elastic, strong, then the effect of muscles on it is negligible. However, the weakened gland is compressed strongly, so there is an abundant discharge of tears.

This can also be caused by weakness of the lacrimal gland or, conversely, by very active yawning, in which many muscles are involved.

It is perfectly normal that tears flow in the yawning process. Why some people consider this strange is incomprehensible, because this is as much a natural process as sipping, yawning or closing your eyes.

If the question is caused by a general abundant discharge of tears, then the doctor can prescribe procedures to restore the patency of the nasolacrimal canal. In any case, do not take this as something unusual.

What to do with it

Some are not very pleased to feel tears in their eyes. Mascara may leak and make-up deteriorate. It is almost impossible to deal with this phenomenon, but some methods can be used.

If tears when yawning do not give an invigorating effect, but cause discomfort, you can learn to manage this situation. We cannot always control this process, but we can influence it a little. If this is inconvenient, you can try not to yawn widely, if possible. Then the facial muscles will be less involved, they will not strain the gland. You can also try not to close your eyes. These tips help, but they are not always feasible due to the fact that the yawning process can only be controlled to a certain extent.

Why is it necessary

When yawning, tears flow from the eyes. Why this is programmed by nature remains a mystery. However, tears give a cheer up, bring a cleansing effect. As well as yawning, which often helps to wake up a little and feel a little better.
