Squats with a bar are both with equipment, and without it. A special suit not only provides protection for the joints, but also helps in the implementation of the exercise. Therefore, the records differ quite a lot.
Records among men
In 2016, Russian powerlifter Andrei Malanichev set the world record for barbell squats. His result was 485 kilograms without equipment! He in 2010 showed the best result in a squat without equipment - 450 kilograms.
Also a phenomenal athlete is Yuri Belkin, who is known not so much for the weight with which he was able to crouch, but for the ratio of his body weight to the weight of the barbell. In 2016, he managed to crouch with 440 kilograms with a dead weight of 101.5 kilograms! The result is impressive.
However, the immediately following three records of squats with a barbell in a row belong to one person.
For the first time in March 2018, Israeli powerlifter Vlad Alkhazov set a world record of 505 kilograms. Thus, Vlad became the first person in the whole world who managed to crouch with a weight of more than 500 kg without equipment.
A new world record for squatting without a barbell was set relatively recently at a powerlifting tournament in Minsk. The hero of the day was Vlad Alkhazov, who, with his own weight of 178.5 kilograms, managed to crouch with 510 kg on the bar, thereby setting a new world record. However, Vlad did not stop there. And already in the second attempt he updated it, crouching with a weight of 525 kg.
Vlad’s entire equipment was made up of only knee bandages, stretched to the limit.
It is worth noting that the new record holder is characterized by incredible resistance and the will to win, because in 2008 he received a severe knee injury with a rush of three ligaments and deformation of the joint. This happened during his squat with a heavier weight in sports equipment.
Vlad himself, after setting a new record, said that this result was achieved thanks to the three most valuable women in his life - mother, wife and daughter.
How it was, you can see in the video below.
Outfit squats
The Ukrainian powerlifter Evgeny Yarymbash, being a multiple winner of the competition, crouched with 470 kilograms.
“Man-bulldozer” Doni Thompson in 2015 attempted a squat with 590 kg, but the judges did not count the result, considering the squat not deep enough. Nevertheless, at that time, Doni remained a champion with a result of 560 kg.
Surprisingly, the champion in squats with a barbell in equipment is Vladislav Alkhazov. In 2008, he crouched with 567.5 kilograms, which to this day is an absolute world record.
Barbell squats by weight category
In the weight categories up to 125 kg and up to 110 kg, Kirk Karvoski from the USA takes the first place. In 1994, he managed to crouch with a barbell of 455 kilograms. And a year later - in 1995, having reduced his weight, he crouched from 415 kg on his back in the category below.
In the category up to 100 kg, the leader is Ed Cohen, who managed to crouch with 423 kilograms.
Category up to 90 kg. In it, the record has remained unchanged since 1980, when the American athlete Fred Hatfield defeated a 375 kg bar.
With a weight of up to 85 kg, Mike Bridges leads. His record is 379.5 kilograms. The result was set in 1982.
With a weight of less than 75 kilograms, Osby Alexander crouched with a weight of 328 kg, thereby setting a record in the category of up to 75 kg.
In 1987, Jesse Jackson lifted a barbell weighing 300 kg in the weight category to 67.5 kg.
In two categories at once (up to 60 and up to 56 kg), the record belongs to one athlete - the Swede Karlsson Magnus.
And in the lightest category - up to 52 kg - the champion is Pole Andrzej Stanazhek, crouched with a barbell weighing 270.5 kg.
Women's records
In the lightest category (up to 47 kg), Chen Wei-Ling from Taiwan set a record. Her result is 187.5 kg.
In the category of up to 52 kg, the record holder is Wilma Ochoa Vargas from Ecuador, who crouched in equipment with 218 kilograms.
In the weight category up to 57 kg, the record belongs to Anna Ryzhkova, who crouched with 210 kilograms.
The next record in the category up to 84 kg is 267.5 kg. It was installed by Chang Ya-Weng.
And in the highest category among women - over 84 kilograms - the record belongs to Russian powerlifter Galina Karpova, who crouched with a barbell weighing 300.5 kilograms.
In general, powerlifting is not just a very spectacular sport, but a real manifestation of the willpower of athletes. And barbell squats are no exception. Indeed, every year new "supermen" appear, which set new records that were previously considered impossible to squat with a barbell!
