early years
Alexey Popogrebsky was born on August 7, 1972. The future director was born in the family of the famous screenwriter. The boy from an early age was fond of high art, but he planned to devote his life to psychology. To do this, after graduation, he entered the corresponding faculty at Moscow State University. Here for several years he practiced psychology, studied foreign languages and worked as a translator.
Debut movie work
Alexey Popogrebsky began shooting films in 1997. The first work of the director was the short film “Passing”. The author created the tape in collaboration with long-time friend Boris Khlebnikov. The film, whose timing was only 20 minutes, was shot in the format of a walk around the city. The frames from the tape were a cut of fragments captured in separate corners of the capital.
Later, Alexei Popogrebsky repeatedly noted that the film “Passing” was of great importance in his career, since during the filming the directors without experience made the most critical mistakes that graduates of VGIK can make. However, the creators of the short film did not despair and made the right conclusions.
In 2000, another work by Popogrebsky and Khlebnikov followed. The second film of novice directors was the project "Tricky Frog". The picture was more mature. And this is not surprising, because the eminent actor Thomas Motzkus was invited to the main role, and the famous cameraman Sandor Berkeshi was responsible for the quality of the picture.
First feature film
In 2003, Alexei Popogrebsky presented his first full-length picture, entitled “Koktebel,” to a wide audience. As before, the operator was Sandor Berkesi. The leading roles were invited by such artists as Vladimir Kucherenko, Agrippina Steklova, Igor Chernevich, as well as the Latvian actor Gleb Puskepalis.
The film "Koktebel" tells the story of the adventures of a man and his son, who get to Crimea in passing cars. During the trip, they meet many extraordinary personalities who leave their mark in the souls of the heroes. It is worth noting that the debut full-length film by Alexei Popogrebsky had a huge resonance. The film managed to collect many prestigious awards at major film forums. One of the main prizes was the prize of the Silver George International Festival.
Director's finest hour
Alexey Popogrebsky managed to become truly famous after working on the dramatic film "Simple Things". The protagonist of the film is a simple doctor named Sergey, who has to cope not only with work, but also put a whole host of everyday problems on his own shoulders. The character of the film is offered a good part-time job, namely, to give injections of painkillers to a hopelessly sick, once- famous actor. Soon, the suffering artist asks Sergei for euthanasia.
Alexei Popogrebsky’s film “Simple Things” won a number of awards. The author of the picture was awarded the Grand Prix of the Kinotavr Film Festival. Moreover, the creator of the tape received a prize in the nomination "Best Director".
