Quite often, owners of cattle have to deal with such a thing as warts on the udder of cows. The causes and treatment of a disease called scientific papillomatosis are directly related to the conditions of the animal and its hygiene.
Causes of papillomatosis infection
With improper care or contact of a cow with an infected individual, the risk of papillomas on the udder is quite high. Infection can occur through skin cracks and invisible wounds, during a general watering from a dirty source.
For example, it can be a swamp overgrown with reeds or a river, wandering into which a cow injures the udder, touches them with algae and dirty water.
Inventory, feeding troughs, poorly disinfected medical instruments can also be carriers of the virus. As a preventive measure, in order to prevent the appearance of warts, it is necessary to wipe the udder several times during the day with warm water and monitor the cows during walking.
Papillomas on the udder of a cow: description
Warts on the udder, most often found in young heifers, are benign formations located on the nipples of the animal and significantly complicate milking or make it completely impossible due to severe pain for the animal. Such mushroom-like growths, sitting on a long thin stalk or a wide base, can protrude above the surface of the skin or hide between the nipples. Papillomas are arranged in groups, merging with each other and forming folds, or singly, which thoroughly simplifies their elimination. It is enough to bandage the wart at the base with hair pulled from the tail of the cow and wait until it dries and falls off by itself.

Papillomas are formed on the surface of the whole body (from head to legs), but since they are simply not visible under the coat, and they are visible on the udder, it is believed that papillomatosis affects only the mammary gland and nipples. Warts are most uncomfortable during milking, which can be judged by the painful reaction of the cow and a significant decrease in milk yield.
Delete or not delete?
Many animal owners believe that papillomas should not be removed if they do not interfere with milking the animal. However, the opinion of veterinarians in this matter has the opposite meaning: papilloma is a viral infection, has a weakening effect on the immunity of a pet and, without treatment, will immediately remind itself of itself as soon as possible. Therefore, the treatment of warts in a cow on the udder can be delayed only for some time.
Warts tend to disappear on their own, which often happens after the first calving. This is due to the powerful immunity of the animal, especially in the spring season, when the feed contains the maximum number of vitamins and minerals. Treatment in this case is not required, but this does not mean that the infection has left the cow's body forever. There is a risk of reinfection, so many veterinarians advise vaccinating livestock.
Papillomatosis vaccination
The veterinarian can make the vaccine under normal conditions. The material for it is cut and finely ground papillomas, which must be diluted to 5% with the same parts of saline and glycerin. Then, by adding formalin, the suspension is brought to a 0.5% concentration, as a result of which the virus becomes inactive. The settled particles should be removed, and the purified liquid used as a vaccine: 10 ml is administered, and after two weeks the injection is repeated.
Next, consider how to treat a cow's warts on the udder.
Externally and internally
Treatment of warts on a cow on the udder can be carried out surgically, by carefully cutting or unscrewing them. Then a suture is applied, and the wound is treated with aerosols containing antibiotics. With a massive amount of papillomas, the virus should be disposed of both externally and internally. Twice a day for 10 days it is necessary to give the cow magnesia (30 grams), while treating the growths with a special drug. This can be liquid nitrogen, acetic acid, salicylic collodion or lapis (a special antiseptic pencil containing silver nitrate). Of the medicines, the veterinary medicine Antiborodavodka, ointment “Dairyila Milkmaid” and “Aluminum Spray” are effective.
Lubricate the cow’s warts on the udder, the treatment of which takes a long time, is required after each milking, until the latter disappears completely. This will take several weeks.
Cows on the udder of a cow: how to withdraw?
Treatment of the disease can be carried out by the introduction of vitamin B12: within 2 days (morning and evening), 5 ml. Previously, an injection of 2% novocaine (dosage - 1 ml) under the base of the papilloma should be done.
You can inject novocaine-penicillin around a benign growth and intravenously, or apply
novocaine blockade, injecting 80 ml of 1% concentration of novocaine into the
jugular vein every other day. It will take about 4 injections.
