How many times do we mentally want to answer the one who turned out to be stronger or more agile. We come up with various moves, we imagine, if there was another opportunity, we would never have blundered again. We are talking about an interesting phenomenon - revenge, this is an object of research for us today.
History
Sometimes we know: a word of foreign origin, but we can’t prove it in any way. In this case, we can not only prove, but also explain. According to the etymological dictionary, "revenge" is in French "reckoning". It is best to write in Latin in its original form - revanche. If you look even deeper, then the roots of this definition are Latin.
Of course, people rarely think about the connection of languages, but after all in English there is a similar word meaning "revenge" - revenge. Even in spelling, the difference is small, not to mention the consonance. But the word "revenge" has become so dear that one does not want to believe in its foreign origin. But, as they say, Plato is my friend, but the truth is more expensive.
Value
The object of research is primarily associated with sporting events, and this is no accident, because in sport, in fact, as in life, everything is cyclical. For example, in football in the Russian or European league the same teams play every year, so the opportunity to get even for past grievances arises with enviable regularity. But everyday life does not deny revanchist sentiments. However, more on that later, now our concern is the meaning of the word “revenge”: “Payment for defeat (in war, in the game)”.
As you can see, the dictionary is up to date. Even if people use the object of study in everyday speech, the situation is most likely competitive, that is, a game. Even when men compete and beat women from each other, it is still a game, albeit cynical. And here, revenge is what is entirely possible.
Synonyms
The meaning is behind, therefore, with a clear conscience, we can turn to the semantic substitutions of the noun:
There are not so many synonyms for “revenge”, because the word itself is quite unique, piecewise, so let the reader not worry. The difference between the object of study and its analogues is that the latter are much more widely applicable. When one team plays with another, we can say that defeat is revenge. But the last noun is used not only in the context of war or game. Revenge is a more “highly specialized" concept.
Sentences with the word
The reader may have noticed and already blamed us that we did not give examples of use. But this reproach is slightly premature, because the proposals with the word "revenge" are already in a hurry, so as not to upset anyone, to appear before us. Let's look at them:
- “Dad, yesterday we lost to the team of the neighboring yard devastatingly, but tomorrow we will have a rematch. We won’t lose this game. ”
- “Do you remember when you beat me basketball at school? So, today we are going to the gym, and I will quench my thirst for revenge, because there will be a rematch! ”
- “In order for revenge to happen, we need to accumulate strength and work on tactics.”
Regarding the image that could be attached to the object of study, the film “Downhole Rematch” (2013) suggests itself. He came out 5 years ago. The most important thing in this film is that it meets Sylvester Stallone and Robert de Niro. They once played iconic characters - Rocky Balboa and Jake Lamotta. And even despite the fact that in the “Downhole Rematch” the heroes were called differently, the viewer still perceived this fight as a battle of famous athletes.
What can be considered a full-fledged sports retribution?
You can often hear the noun we are analyzing from game sports commentators. But often this is done not for the sake of truth, but in order to foster the spectators' interest in the game. Imagine the following situation. Teams are now meeting in the playoffs, that is, elimination games, and one club knocks out another. The following year, these same rivals figure out the relationship in the group, that is, the importance of the match is several times less. Commentators in such cases ask the viewer: “Do you think the team that lost last year will be able to take revenge, is this even possible?”
So it was in a pair of Juventus - Barcelona. In the last Champions League draw, the Italian club knocked out Spanish from the playoff round, and this year the rivals met in the group. And already, Barcelona was celebrating a victory, and there was a draw in the return game.
And here a logical question arises: can this be considered revenge? Answer: of course not, because Barcelona have not knocked Juventus out of the trophy, as the Italian city did last season. Real sports retaliation would have happened if the clubs had sorted out relations at the same stage of the competition, and Barcelona would have inflicted a crushing defeat on the Italians.
But, of course, when it comes to the interpretation of words, here one can put forward various theories, hypotheses, and explain one or another position in their own way. But it seems that a full reckoning is possible only when the bets are the same, and everything else is showman tricks. And what do you think?
