Quite often, in the annotations to the drugs, you can see a note that they should be used rectally. In addition, often people hear about rectal examinations. No matter how surprising it may sound, but not everyone knows what it means. However, not everyone dares to ask a sacramental question: “Rectally? Where is it? ” Well, dispel doubts about everything related to this definition!

What does it mean?

So, this term means only the fact that manipulations will be performed with the rectum through the anus (in other words, the anus). That's all, nothing complicated, scary or incomprehensible.

If drugs are prescribed rectally - where and how should they be administered?

Most often, candles are used this way. They can be prescribed to lower the temperature, eliminate pain, treat various diseases (hemorrhoids, cancer). Such a drug should be injected into the anus. It is not so difficult to do this, but many doubt how to properly administer the drug rectally. This is where the pointed end of the candle should be directed, and how deeply should it enter? First things first:

1. First you need to put the blister with the medicine in the refrigerator for several minutes, because otherwise the candles will simply melt in your hands. You can just hold the candle (in the package) under a stream of cool water.
2. Immediately before the introduction of the product, wash your hands (thoroughly, with soap). You can wear gloves (medical).
3. Open the packaging, take out the candle.
4. To make the administration as painless as possible, lubricate the pointed end of the candle with some lubricant (no petroleum jelly).
5. Then the one to whom the candle is introduced must lie on its side. The leg, which is below, should be straightened, and the one that is above is pulled up to the stomach.
6. The upper buttock must be raised, the patient must relax. The candle is inserted into the anus to a depth of about 2.5-5 cm (for children - from 2.5 to 3 cm). It is convenient to do this with the index finger.
7. Once the candle is inserted, the buttocks must be squeezed and lay still for about 5 minutes. As you can see, introducing a rectal suppository is quite simple!

In what other cases can this definition be heard?

Quite often, a rectal examination is prescribed. This is done both by surgeons and gynecologists. Knowing that such an examination is ahead, it is worthwhile to first clarify whether an enema is needed.

Periodically in this way the temperature is measured. Sometimes to perform such manipulation rectally is much more expedient than in the traditional way (axillary). This is especially often practiced in the treatment of children. True, a special thermometer will be needed (mercury models are highly recommended to be abandoned in favor of electronic or those that use tin).

The baby will need to be put on the tummy, remove the clothes covering the buttocks. To facilitate the procedure, you can put a pillow under the hips of the child. The thermometer is introduced to a depth of about 2 cm. The measurement duration is no more than 5 minutes.
