Almazov Center (St. Petersburg) is a federal medical research institution. It rightfully takes a leading place in the list of the largest scientific and medical institutions of the Russian Federation.

Founder
At the origins of the Center was Vladimir Andreevich Almazov. This famous Russian cardiologist, doctor of medical sciences, academician, professor of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences was a graduate of the 1st Leningrad Medical Institute named after ac. Pavlova. Over the 47 years of his life, Almazov trained highly qualified personnel. He was an employee of the University. ac. Pavlova, whose diploma he himself received. From 1971 to 1997 Almazov headed the clinic of the department of therapy. It was she who received her development in the form of a multidisciplinary medical institution.

Which departments were originally part of the Almazov Center? There were only five of them. Among them were the departments of cardiology and endocrinology, intensive care, as well as hematological and therapeutic. It was the founder of this institution that laid the foundation of the scientific school of cardiology. It served as the basis for the emergence of the Federal State Institution Federal Center for Psychology and Culture V.A. Almazova.

Today the Almazov Center (St. Petersburg) is headed by Evgeny Vladimirovich Shlyakhto. The successor and follower of the Russian scientist took his post in 2001, after the departure of Almazov. Shlyakhto is an Honored Scientist of Russia and an academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The Director General, who heads the Northwest Center of Almazov, was elected President of the Russian Cardiology Society, and is also the chief cardiologist of St. Petersburg and the entire Northwest District.
At his post, this outstanding Russian scientist made a significant contribution to solving the practical and theoretical problems of the organization of the institution, to the development of revolutionary methods of treatment and diagnosis of pathologies of blood vessels and the heart. And today, the Almazov Medical Center conducts intensive research in the field of translational medicine related to the problems of molecular diagnostics, providing high-tech care to patients, creating materials with biocompatibility, etc.
History of development
The budgetary state federal research institution of the Ministry of Health of Russia, which the Center is, was founded in 1980. Its organization was caused by extreme necessity due to the ever-increasing incidence of diseases and disability of the population caused by pathologies of the circulatory system.
The first Institute of Cardiology was opened in Moscow. The initiator of his appearance was Academician E.I. Chazov. After this, a new Leningrad Research Institute arose, which was initially considered the Institute of Cardiology of the RSFSR. He was led by Diamonds.
The city leadership handed over to the institute a cardiac rheumatic dispensary, as well as a hospital with a capacity of 300 beds. In addition, budget funds necessary for the repair of the clinic were allocated.
The Center was set a global task to improve existing and create the latest methods of diagnosis, prevention and treatment of various kinds of cardiovascular pathologies. This would improve public health and reduce the incidence and mortality of Russians.
Named later in honor of Almazov, the cardiology center had a remote service. Her specialists received by phone, and also analyzed the electrocardiograms that the townspeople transmitted to them. Thus, patients received the help of highly qualified specialists.
How else did he develop. Almazova Cardiology Center? On its basis, the departments of coronary heart disease, arterial hypertension, emergency cardiology were opened. A block was also created in which intensive care was carried out.
The Almazov Center, whose doctors were only highly qualified specialists, was able to carry out very complex research work in the first years of its activity. In this institution, a team of like-minded people has formed, laying the foundation of the latest scientific and clinical school.
From the very first days of its existence, the federal center of Almazov began research activities aimed at creating high-quality domestic medical devices. And already in 1983, the laboratory of clinical physiology of blood circulation released a portable cardiomonitor called "Inkart."
In 1987, the department of cardiac surgery was created at the institute. This allowed the Center to move to a higher level of medical care for the population. The institute rented premises located in the building of the 4th city hospital.
In 1991, the next stage began, predetermining the further improvement of the organizational structure of the Center. Almazov took the initiative to unite the scientific and medical departments of the institution. This would accelerate the results of introducing the latest techniques into practice. And such a union has occurred. Previously scattered units turned into NPOs - scientific and clinical departments.
In 2004, the Institute received permission from the Ministry of Education of Russia, giving it the right to create a Dissertation Council. Thus, the Center’s scientists began to defend their doctoral and doctoral dissertations directly in the clinic.
Today, this institution of the Ministry of Health of Russia is one of the leading centers in the country where cardiac surgery and cardiological assistance is provided to the population, applied and fundamental research is carried out. Also, there is carried out training for advanced training of specialists and scientists.
Construction of new buildings
Back in the eighties, the fact that the institute did not receive proper development due to the limited space available to it became obvious. That is why in 1987 the task was given to design a modern clinical complex that can receive 480 patients. In addition, the building provided for an outpatient department. It was designed for three hundred and sixty visits in one shift.
According to plans, the construction of the building was supposed to be completed in 1992. However, due to the lack of adequate funding, the construction was frozen for almost 10 years.
A new stage in the fate of the unfinished building began in 2001. It was then that preparations were being made for the celebration of the 300th anniversary of the founding of St. Petersburg, and the building became an object included in the list of those whose construction should be completed.
The new clinic-polyclinic building was inaugurated in autumn 2006. In addition to the main departments, it houses the largest blood transfusion station in St. Petersburg.
In 2007, an order was issued by the Government of Russia, which indicated the need to create state perinatal centers. Almazov Medical Center included one of them. The perinatal center in St. Petersburg began receiving patients already on 11/11/2010.
Diagnostics
Russia's largest North-West Federal Research Center provides assistance to its patients on a paid basis. He also accepts compulsory health insurance policies.
Almazov Center invites Russians and residents of foreign countries to:
1. Multislice computed tomography. In this largest medical center, three of the latest multispiral tomographs work immediately. One of them is located in the CPC (clinic-polyclinic building). 3. Radioisotope diagnostics. This study is the most advanced method of radiation imaging. The basis of this technique is the use of chemical elements labeled with radionuclides. Radioisotope diagnostics allows us to evaluate not only the functional state of human tissues and organs, but also to check the receptor status and cellular metabolism.
4. Laboratory diagnostics. Almazov Medical Center has modern devices produced by leading world manufacturers. Thanks to the automatic analyzers ABBOT, Becton Dickinson, Radiometer, Beckman Coulter, Roche and the use of only proprietary reagents in them, laboratory diagnostics by the specialists of this institution is performed at the highest level.
5. Functional diagnostics. The department for the provision of these services is located in the clinic-polyclinic complex. It carries out examinations by experienced highly qualified specialists on the most modern medical equipment.
6. X-ray diagnostics. This branch is also located in the CCP on the street. Akkuratova, 2. There is it in the Perinatal Center near the clinic-polyclinic complex (2a Akkuratova St.). These departments are equipped with digital, state-of-the-art equipment, with which X-ray diagnostics are carried out at the highest level. 7. Endoscopic diagnosis. This direction has a special place in the study of the gastrointestinal tract. From other methods, endoscopic diagnosis is distinguished, first of all, by a direct examination by the eye, and not by an assessment of indirect signs.
Using unique complexes
Almazov Center reviews of patients who underwent diagnosis and treatment in it, receives, as a rule, positive. And this is no coincidence. The center is the only medical institution in the North-West region of the Russian Federation where doctors use the Da Vinci robotic surgical complex. This is a whole system of devices, which consists of three parts. Its design includes an operating console equipped with 4 working manipulators, a control panel and a dashboard. During the operation, the robot copies the movements of the doctor. At the same time, the specialist is an operator and sits at the control panel.
Mechanical "arms" of the complex repeat the movements of the fingers and hands of the surgeon. Such a system serves to improve the quality of the operation and maintain the effectiveness of the doctor, who is less tired and maintains his working capacity for a long time.
The ophthalmology department of the Center is equipped with the safest and most modern laser of the German company Carl Zeiss. With its help, patients undergo high-quality operations.
Unique equipment is also installed in the endocrinology department. A system works here that allows round-the-clock monitoring of glucose in the blood.
Clinic structure
Northwestern Medical Research Center Almazova is provided with high-tech and specialized care for sick people.
In the structure of the clinic there is a hospital that can accommodate 1357 people, a center for consultations and diagnostics, as well as a perinatal center for 166 beds. About 36 thousand people receive timely medical care annually. More than 170 thousand are seeking advice from a diagnostic center.
The structure of the main building
In the northern zone of the Specific Park, which is located in the Primorsky district of St. Petersburg, the main building of the Almazov Center is located. This is the main clinical building of the country's largest medical research center. A huge park zone adjoins the building, which is used for rehabilitation of patients and for walking. The park zone is remote from the noisy motorways of the city and is isolated from other functional objects of the clinic.
The construction of the main clinical complex was carried out in separate stages. The first of them was completed in 2006. As a result, the following were commissioned:

- administration rooms;
- Department for blood transfusion.
At the second stage, the clinic received the following blocks:
- hospital;
- operational;
- medical and diagnostic.
The third stage involved the commissioning of the positron emission tomography department with a cyclotron.
Cardiology departments
All of them are located in the main building of the center and accept patients with the following problems:
- with acute and chronic forms of cardiac ischemia;
- pathologies of the aorta, as well as its branches;
- acquired heart defects;
- diseases of the pericardium and myocardium;
- thromboembolism of the lungs;
- with diseases provoked by pulmonary hypertension;
- with congenital heart defects in adults.

Perinatal center
This structural unit of the Almazov Clinic began its work on November 1, 2010. The Perinatal Center was the first medical institution of its kind in the Northwestern Federal District. It provides specialized obstetric, neonatological and gynecological care for women. To achieve its high quality allows the use of the latest medical technologies.
The perinatal center is engaged in:
- improving the reproductive health of women suffering from extragenital pathologies;
- surgical correction of congenital malformations of the newborn and fetus;

- Five maternity rooms;
- emergency and planned operating rooms;
- an office for blood transfusion;
- Three rooms of a reserve in which functional beds are established.
Almazova Center maternity hospital has the most modern. Equipment has been installed here that allows for careful delivery. New modern beds have comfortable mattresses and a lightweight transformation mechanism. They allow women to take the most comfortable position in the 1st and 2nd period of childbirth. In the halls where babies are born, there are children's resuscitation tables and equipment with which emergency assistance is provided to newborns. There are also cardiotocographs that allow monitoring of the heart rate of the fetus, as well as uterine activity. The perinatal center also has equipment with which monitoring of hemodynamic parameters of the mother is carried out.
The department provides patients with psychological relaxation, which uses balloons, massagers and showers.
The work of this department focuses on family delivery. Participation in them should be taken by the husband or other accompanying person. According to patients, partner births are very good for psychological contact between spouses. Keeping confidence and calm, the husband supports his beloved.
