Thanks to the brilliant talent and indefatigable energy of Stanley Kubrick, the best film in the history of cinema about space was shot back in the late 60s. This is an axiom. The creator of a series of amazing blockbusters Christopher Nolan did not think to dispute this fact. However, his new creation - “Interstellar” - is a film of the grandest in scale. He is a very serious contender for an enviable place in the golden collection of film adventures of our days.
Film preamble
Director Christopher Nolan is a pro in the science fiction genre, so for the entire duration of the film (2 hours 45 minutes), the viewer is immersed in a special atmosphere of pathos talking about quantum mechanics, gravity and the theory of relativity. From time to time, rather pompous reasonings of the main characters about the fate of mankind, about love and family values ​​penetrate into the endless stream of scientific terminology. Purely formal, Interstellar (critics' confirmation of this) is shakily balancing between the model of Soviet scientific cinema science fiction such as the Moon Rainbow and the iconic Space Odyssey by the prominent Stanley Kubrick. The idea of ​​the director Nolan to magnify the workdays of the astronauts is largely due to the musical accompaniment of Hans Zimmer, which fits perfectly into each episode of the movie "Interstellar", the music successfully creates an imaginary effect of globality.
The main idea of ​​the movie "Interstellar"
The plot of the picture is hardly innovative. Planet Earth is once again experiencing a global environmental disaster. Mankind (Americans were no exception) is forced to conquer scarce crops from nature, while two of the three main types of bread (cereals and rice) have sunk into oblivion, only corn remains, and even then it is on the verge of extinction. Dust storms sweep across the earth's surface, sweeping away everything in its path. NASA is not there, the US army is oblivious, the economy is curtailed, people care only about the problem of hunger. The protagonist, the ex-pilot Cooper (Matthew McConaughey), brings up his daughter and son alone, sometimes looking longingly at distant stars. Soon, especially when Cooper is discussing with children about space exploration and landing on the moon, strange and inexplicable phenomena begin to occur in the nursery .
The farther, the more fun
This is how the main intrigue of the picture “Interstellar” begins, the plot further becomes much more dynamic. The main character manages to understand the secret signs given by an unknown force, in the message are the geographical coordinates of the point in the desert, where Cooper goes with his daughter. Upon reaching their destination, the heroes end up in a secret NASA branch, in which Dr. Brand (Michael Kane) makes an intriguing offer to his father. It is Cooper who must go to the planet Saturn, near which there is a temporary hole, which is able to move the space shuttle to another galaxy. And astronauts must find in her planet suitable for the life of the human race. The children of the protagonist are categorically against, because they understand that the father may not return, but Cooper accepts the offer and soon flies into space in the company of the daughter of Brand Amelia (En Hathaway) and two astronauts, one of whom is traditionally black.
The Unthinkable Balance
True fans of the science fiction genre will surely remember the chaotic cinematic explanation of the appearance of the greatest monster Godzilla in the film "Godzilla against the space monster." There, the appearance of the monster is explained by the passage of its cells through the Black hole with absorption during the path of crystalline structures. This funny absurdity fit nicely into the Japanese fantasy movie genre. But the picture "Interstellar" (reviews are unanimous in opinion) in all seriousness, with the support of a renowned scientific consultant, gives an incredible balance. The quantum information read by the robot from the edges of the black hole is transmitted by the character using the eternal Morse code to the clock hand that remained on Earth, and at that time the hero himself hung in a certain fifth dimension, surrounded by bookshelves and rooms of his daughter. And this information is the key, it will help the planet avoid disaster. Moreover, Nolan fans saw the creator’s grandiose plan in this, and the poor Japanese can only nervously smoke aside, revising Interstellar - the film is truly fantastic.
Space dust
Christopher Nolan is not the only author who skillfully developed the topic of quantum mechanics, before him Didier van Koveller and Michelle Welbeck practiced this in his works. The difference is that the picture "Interstellar" (a review of every second film critic emphasizes this fact) is based on the provocative works of theoretical physicist Kip Thorne. Individual dialogues are oversaturated with physical terms, which is similar to the notorious cosmic dust in the gullible eyes of the viewer. One does not have to be a physicist to understand that the phrase that if quantum mechanics becomes a contradiction to the theory of relativity, then everything around will become bad - it is extremely absurd. Exaggerating emotions strive for hyperbole
If you drag the storyline into the theses and try to summarize it on paper, then one sheet from the student’s notebook is enough. The mastery of the creator of the film Interstellar (a review by film expert Vyacheslav Surikov reflects in detail all the director’s techniques) lies in detail, if you describe them, you wouldn’t have enough of whatman. Virtuoso Nolan continues to work on the system of entertaining creative schizophrenia, which he successfully tested in the film "Beginning" (2010). The maestro seems to be leading the audience through surreal scenery of truly epic proportions, not forgetting to stop from time to time in the real classrooms of the university, in the cozy rooms of the houses of the inhabitants of the Midwest. And to the majestic music of Hans Zimmer, with the light hand of the creator, he accompanies the familiar knock of chalk on the board. And everyday drama is an attempt to scientifically explain what is happening, diluted with quotes from great physicists and Isaac Newton himself, in terms like “singularity” and complex schemes. The curvature of interstellar space intersects with the eternal problem of the relationship between fathers and children, and the fear of the complete destruction of humanity with the detachment depicted on the graph of quantum reality. In a word, the director exaggerates emotions with moments, and in individual episodes boldly plays hyperbolas, but does not cross the outlined framework of the blockbuster philosophy. The resourcefulness, dexterity and originality with which Christopher Nolan collects a mosaic of his own composition in the best episodes of Interstellar undoubtedly deserves the highest praise.
Actors and roles
The interstellar film, the actors of which perfectly got used to the images of their characters, can safely brag about the successful cast. Oscar-winner Matthew McConaughey, star of the successful television series True Detective and the movie Dallas Buyers Club, created a damn charismatic astronaut character. In contrast, the image of Annie Hathaway, whose heroine has not previously left the laboratory. The psychological credibility of the film was provided by the actors Jessica Chastain, David Gezy, Casey Affleck, Matt Damon. And no one is already focusing on the fact that in the alignment of characters there is a time-tested standard: a beauty is distributed to the main male character in companions, etc. Heroes “grow”, develop, and watching this is more than interesting throughout the entire Interstellar movie. The actors did their best.
On the verge of a capacious metaphor
It is no coincidence that domestic distributors preferred the mysterious original Interstellar to the translation of the name “Interstellar”. The release date (06. 11. 2014) was chosen without much intent. On the same day, it became completely clear that even the director’s Gravity, Cuaron’s hit, was far behind, and the brainchild of K. Nolan was on a par with the work of Kubrick and Tarkovsky's Solaris. They are united with the latter by “setting the spectator’s brain to work”, and much of the plot narrative balances on the verge of metaphysics. But in terms of technical performance and entertainment, the movie has very few rivals.
Epilogue
The achievement of the creators of the film Interstellar (a review by Velimir Razuvaev, special correspondent of Nezavisimaya Gazeta, emphasizes precisely the right moments) consists in preserving fantastic and at the same time adventurous content. The humanity of the main characters, the motivation and logic of their actions are not distorted by the traditional "interstellar glamor." The film has moments of suspense, a riddle, intrigue and a climax that does not disappoint.
