The fall of 2015 was rich and generous with unusual new movies, and one of the long-awaited surprises was the premiere of a comedy with Robert De Niro and Anne Hathaway called The Intern. Reviews about the film turned out to be mixed: critics received the tape very coolly, but the audience appreciated it, already in the first days of the rental, caressed hundreds of benevolent reviews on the network.
There were a lot of expectations for the new Nancy Myers movie. Firstly, the success of previous projects of the famous director and screenwriter to some extent obliged the “Trainee” to stand on a par with “What Women Want” and “Exchange Holidays”. Secondly, the star cast of the film before the premiere made it one of the most passionately anticipated fans.
Plot of the film
The plot focuses on pensioner Ben Whittaker (Robert De Niro). Despite his advanced years and widower status, Ben does not want to dwell on a boring and well-fed existence. Having tried many of the charms of a widower's pensioner life, he decides to go to work. The case brings him to the young collective of a small online fashion store, where Ben gets a job as an intern.
At first, the stay of an elderly person surrounded by creative, ambitious, sometimes too straightforward and even tactless youth causes some bewilderment. The viewer begins to worry about the main character, experiencing an almost real awkwardness at the sight of his indefatigable diligence and desire to benefit.
What will the “Intern” teach?
However, soon the film turns into a good tale that human capabilities are almost unlimited, that age and time are not able to drain a person’s liveliness of mind and the ability to enjoy the moment. Ben comes to the company Jules Austin (Anne Hathaway) as an intern, in fact, the online store team begins to learn from Ben delicacy, the ability to trust, make friends and even dress fashionably.
Jules herself, who, before meeting Ben, seemed to be in oblivion, comes to herself and begins to look at the world with different eyes. What does she see in him? What role does he play? The plot of the film "Trainee" answers these questions. The actors brilliantly conveyed the good, positive mood underlying the film.
Polarity of reviews
Hollywood directors make films about elderly people with surprising frequency, but it is precisely such films as “Trainee” that receive special love from the audience. Reviews about the film really were extremely diverse. Film critics showed almost disappointment, but their attacks could not convince a more grateful audience, and the film became one of the most popular in all the box office in the fall of 2016. Of course, the cordial reception of the tape was due to positive attention. "Trainee" talks about the life of an elderly person. Along with such films as “Until I played a box”, “Hotel Marigold is the best of exotic”, etc., this film was able to cheer up an audience of any age. The message of a joyful, full of new opportunities for life in retirement could hardly leave the viewer indifferent. Especially when such a positive point of view is heard from the screen through the lips of a famous actor.
The emotional component of the film
The sensitivity and delicacy of friendship, the issues of choice and trust, a reasonable attitude to oneself and one's life go through the whole film with a red thread, which makes the “Intern” tape even more valuable from an ethical point of view. Reviews about the film in Russia were much more enthusiastic than in the homeland of this movie. Despite the fact that the inhabitants of our country are hardly close to the topic of the beginning of a new prosperous life in retirement, the “Intern” was received warmly and generously. An unpretentious, full of good irony story quickly fell in love with the Russians.

And this is not surprising: the story of friendship, fidelity, unlimited possibilities and success at any stage of your life cannot but inspire cheerfulness, optimism and a long-lasting good mood. A good movie should make a person at least a little better, a little happier. The Intern did a great job of this task. Reviews of the film for the most part reflect a subjective opinion, while objective is born when watching a movie with family and friends.
