There are words in Russian that sound strange to the Russian ear. And we just can’t understand what catches us. Most likely dissonance. Remember, when atypical pneumonia was rampant, then many were visited by the fear of infection? Typical, we know how to treat, and as for the atypical? But we will not talk about diseases, but about logic. What connects the words "atypical" and "illogical"? This is the prefix "a". But consider today not only her.
Insidious prefix "a"
Believe it or not, but each console has its own meaning. People are used to thinking that the words themselves have a certain meaning, but without the prefixes the last meaning simply would not exist. We give examples to make it clear what is at stake. The prefix "o" means the excessiveness of the action, its direction or transformation into something. Compare the two sentences:
- I looked into the sky and saw nothing but the endless, boundless blue.
- I entered the room and decided to look around first.
In the last sentence, the action is supposed to be more thorough than the usual, fleeting review. Here it is, excessive action.
Or is there, for example, another prefix “in”, it means moving inward, because you can “look”, or you can “peer”, as if penetrating the object, clarifying its details.
Therefore, one should not be surprised that in the adjective “illogical” the same regularity (dependence of meaning on the prefix) is also traced. But only the prefix “a” has a different meaning - the denial of a property or attribute. For instance:
- immoral (lack of morality);
- apolitical (no political beliefs or views);
- asymmetric (lack of symmetry).
Moreover, if each of us studied Russian as a foreign language, we would immediately notice for ourselves this feature - the meaning-creating potential of the prefix. And with the native language it’s more difficult to see the details, even if they tell us about them at school. Probably enough. Now that the technical base has been brought to our knowledge, we can answer the main question: “What does it mean illogical?”
Value
After the previous information, the task no longer seems so complicated. And imagine, if we, without any preparation, referred to the explanatory dictionary, and this is the end? It would be confusing and incomprehensible. And a completely different story when the study of meaning is based on grammatical subtleties. However, enough. According to the explanatory dictionary, “illogical” is “violating the laws and rules of logic; illogical".
It's nice that you can have some fun and give examples of illogical actions:
- A man starts dinner with tea, and in the finale he has soup.
- Seeing that it is raining outside, we dress up in shorts.
- In order to cheer up and dispel the child’s fears, we suggest that he watch “Nightmares on Elm Street”.
The reader himself can continue this series. And if he needs artistic examples, then let us recall the wonderful poem by S. Ya. Marshak “This is so absent-minded”. The work of Daniel Harms is also suitable. There are many illogical illustrations in it, it is as true as the fact that March is now in the yard.
Synonyms
After all that the reader and I experienced, it seems to deserve a reward - synonyms for the object of study. Do not worry, there will be few of them. So, the list:
- insane;
- crazy;
- confused;
- incomprehensible;
- inconsistent.
The main thing here is to understand that the usual course of things goes astray. And the last circumstance can give rise to both miracles and nightmares. In other words, the meaning of the word "illogical" can hide many secrets that the reader will have to explore for himself.
