Verhoeven shot his first full-length film, "Business is Business" in 1971. This picture has not gained much popularity. However, two years later, the aspiring director made a film that won both critical acclaim and commercial success - the drama Turkish Delights. There are a lot of frank scenes in the picture, for which she received a tough age rating. But this did not prevent Turkish Delights from earning an Oscar nomination.
None of the films that Verhoeven worked on for the next 12 years managed to gain world fame. The next notable project in the director’s career is the historical drama “Flesh + Blood”, which was jointly worked by Hererd Suthean and Paul Verhoeven. The filmography of the director was replenished with another very naturalistic film. Frank scenes brought the picture a hard rating - X, which did not allow it to recoup even its small budget. However, critics took the new project of an extraordinary director to "cheers" and assigned the film the status of a cult.
Jobs in Hollywood
A year later, Paul Verhoeven moved to Hollywood and immediately decided to try himself in a new genre. His first American project was the fantastic action movie Robocop. The film again received a tough age rating, but box office receipts exceeded the budget four times. When the film won an Oscar, Paul Verhoeven became one of the most sought-after directors in Hollywood. The filmography of the director was soon replenished with another fantastic action movie - "Remember Everything." This picture also won an Oscar and collected more than $ 250 million at the box office.
In 1992, Paul Verhoeven directed one of the most famous erotic thrillers in the history of cinema - "Basic Instinct." Critics accepted the picture ambiguously, but the audience rated it very highly. And no wonder, because the strong cast, non-trivial plot and beautiful erotic scenes made the film very attractive.
First failure
Not all subsequent projects of the director received worldwide recognition. The biggest flaw in Verhoeven’s career was the Showherles movie, which critics, for various reasons, smashed to pieces. It was noted and disgusting acting, and unsuccessful soundtrack, and poor directing. "Golden Raspberry" as the worst director in 1995 received Paul Verhoeven. Paul's filmography was replenished with the first unsuccessful project, and among his awards appeared "Golden Raspberry" (more precisely, not even one). The director took this failure with humor and personally went up to the stage for all the miscellaneous awards assigned.
A few years later, critics rehabilitated the Shougers. Like many Verhoeven films, he did not acquire the status of a cult film for everyone.
