Lower abdomen hurts. What should I do?

When diseases of the gynecological profile occur, the lower abdomen often hurts in patients. This condition occurs due to diseases of the uterus, its neck and appendages. A similar symptom can also be caused by diseases of the pelvic organs, which are related to the urinary system. Sometimes the etiology of the appearance of pain remains unclear. In men, such symptoms occur much less frequently.

Women have a lower abdominal pain for two reasons. The first includes symptoms that appear regularly during the menstrual cycle. The second group includes pain that is not associated with this period. The most common causes of such sensations are dysmenorrhea, ovulation, endometriosis.

The first disease is characterized by acute or dull pain in the lower abdomen, which develops a couple of days before the menstrual cycle or directly during it. They are accompanied by headache, nausea, diarrhea or constipation, increased urination. Symptoms disappear within one day, but may have a longer duration.

Inflammation of the inner layer of the uterus (endometriosis) often joins dysmenorrhea. The lower abdomen hurts while it is much more intense. Sometimes such sensations can appear outside the menstrual cycle.

Ovulation causes pain, which is characterized by significant intensity. They tend to fade out. Minor bleeding, which is a consequence of peritoneal irritation, may join this symptom.

There are also pains that are not associated with the reproductive system. They can be caused by inflammatory processes, metabolic disorders, external influences, stress. The most common group of diseases due to which the lower abdomen hurts include pathologies of the gastrointestinal tract: gastroenteritis, diverticulitis, enteritis, appendicitis, intestinal obstruction, constipation, caused by tumors, paraproctitis. A significant place in the occurrence of this syndrome is occupied by diseases of the urinary system: pyelonephritis, cystitis, kidney stones.

With discrepancies in the pubic symphysis that occur during premature birth, distension of the abdominal muscles, the lower abdomen also hurts. Psychogenic pathological conditions, which include reactions to psychological, sexual or physical violence, are also characteristic causes of these signs.

In the event of inflammatory diseases that are localized in the pelvic area, the following symptoms develop: pain, urination disorders, vaginal mucopurulent discharge. All signs are characterized by gradual development. There is also an increase in the sensitivity of the uterus and its appendages during studies on the gynecological chair.

If the lower abdomen hurts and this symptom is characterized by a quick onset and the extinction of the symptoms, which occurs in a few hours, then the doctor suspects an ovarian cyst rupture. This condition helps confirm ultrasound.

Sharp pains in the lower abdomen may indicate an impaired pregnancy. Often they are accompanied by bleeding, vomiting, nausea.

Uterine fibroids can cause acute pain, which is accompanied by minor vaginal bleeding. This is due to necrosis of its node. A similar syndrome can provoke twisting of the mesentery of the appendage. The pain is characterized by the unilateral nature of the lesion, sometimes vomiting and nausea may join. This symptom is also characteristic of tumor processes in the ovaries and uterus, adhesions of these organs and spontaneous abortions.
