Each person at least once asked himself a question concerning why a sparrow does not walk, but jump. There are, of course, reasons for this. And it's worth telling about them.
Legend
Why a sparrow does not walk, but jumps, is often justified by a myth. You should first pay attention to this, and then turn to science.
So, there is a legend that the sparrow once strongly offended Jesus Christ himself. Allegedly, this particular bird was the "supplier" of nails for the crucifixion of God's son. And she constantly tweeted: “Are you still alive there?”, “Tolerate?” Be patient. " And other gloating. After that, God forever cursed the sparrow family, even forbidding people to eat their meat. And he enclosed the paws of all the birds in invisible fetters. It is because of them that the sparrows allegedly cannot walk, and they have to jump around.
Scientific explanation
The parable is interesting, but it’s better to turn to the official version explaining why the sparrow does not walk, but jumps.
It all comes down to the biological characteristics of the bird. Sparrow weighs about 23-35 grams. And the length of his body does not exceed 16 centimeters. And the main reason why the bird "jumps" is its proportionality. The ratio of body and tail is equivalent, because the sparrow can move in this way. But there is another reason explaining why the sparrow does not walk, but jumps. These are birds leading a sedentary lifestyle, and living in tree and artisanal stands. They can be said to jump from one branch to another from birth.
In these birds, the muscle controlled by the paws is paired. When a sparrow moves one limb, a second one follows. So such a bird is simply not capable of walking. Anyway, the sparrow's legs are too short. Therefore, even if these birds could walk, they would not be able to maintain balance.
Other interesting facts
It is also worth talking about why pigeons walk and sparrows jump. With the latter, however, everything is clear. But what about the pigeons?
It is worth turning to proportionality again. A pigeon has a smaller and lighter tail than its body. Therefore, it is more convenient for him to move in steps. And also these birds have a long knee joint, because of which they cannot "jump". But they know how. You can watch the dove, which jumps from the road to the sidewalk of the pedestrian zone. It is easy to meet such a sight - literally in every yard. And if you look closely, you can see that, before taking a jump, the bird “crouches” slightly in order to better push off the ground. She doesn’t do this as easily as her younger brother.
And finally, it is worth talking about which birds jump like a sparrow. They are tits and redstart. The first of the listed dimensions are very similar to sparrows. Redstart are very tiny - their length is only 10 cm. So there is practically no weight in them, and the structure is the same as that of a sparrow. Therefore, in this regard, everything is again determined by biology.
By the way, magpies can still move in “jumps”. Their length can reach half a meter, and weight is about 200-230 grams. But again, her body is proportional. And magpies usually go jumping if they want to speed up.
