Another provocative film “Nymphomaniac” by the famous Danes Lars von Trier is built on frank templates, the comprehension and combination of which makes his creation original. With the creator’s light hand, everything was mixed up in the world in which “Nymphomaniac” invites: actors and roles, relations between the author and the characters, men and women, doctors and patients, fish and fishermen, fantasies and reality.
Play with the audience
In his brainchild, Trier boldly experiments with a mixture of movie genres, deliberately breaking up the storytelling into separate chapters, he removes them using different techniques: the first as a real melodrama, the next as a comedy, and another almost as a mockery and mockery of the audience. Sometimes the director’s idea could not be foreseen by the actors. "Nymphomaniac" is the most complicated project in the modern film industry. But by the final episode, the moment of the final credits, a true masterpiece, a bold and powerful painting, emerges from the entire turmoil.
Plot and actors
"Nymphomaniac" begins with the fact that a certain elderly man Seligman (Stellan Skarsgard) goes to the store for shopping. By chance, he finds a battered young woman lying in an almost unconscious state (Charlotte Gainsbourg). Since she begs the hero not to call either an ambulance or the police, he takes the stranger home, puts him to bed, and tries to get a hot tea. The girl introduces herself to Joe and agrees to tell the compassionate man how she got to such a life. Actors of the film "Nymphomaniac" authoritatively declare that the memories of the main character constitute the basis of the structure of the first part of the picture. The plot includes a story about life, from childhood and adolescence to the first sexual experience and a clear schedule of visits to various partners-lovers, generously diluted with games with strangers in the stairwell. The romantic line slips unobtrusively enough, representing longing for the only man who, oddly enough, managed to escape from the heroine. In the film, not only the episodes change, but also the actors. “Nymphomaniac” is special in that Charlotte Gainsbourg remains a purely narrator throughout the picture, and the actress-debutante Stacey Martin acts as a young heroine. The role of the father was played by Christian Slater. The first partner and the last in this part was played by Shaya Labaff. But the listener, commentator, specialist in classical music, higher mathematics and fishing - Skarsgard mentioned above.
Performers of the main and episodic roles
Charlotte Gainsbourg is an Anglo-French actress, songwriter and singer, an integral participant in almost every Trier film, Joe (middle-aged) is good and expressive. Her eyes are like a storehouse of suffering and wisdom. She began her acting career in France, playing the role of daughter Catherine Deneuve in the film "Words and Music", while simultaneously participating in the filming of a video clip of her father Serge Gainsbourg. The promising performer soon received the César Award of French cinema, and in 1990, bathed in the rays of international fame after participating in the film "Cement Garden".
Sophie Kennedy Clark, a Scottish actress, is the main character of Joe in her youth, very sexy and desirable, which corresponds to the author’s idea. 2010 was the debut year for the young talent, and in 2013 she became the owner of the prestigious award and the status “Most Stylish Woman”. Film critics recognized her talent and awarded the “Best Actress” award for the embodiment of the character from the film “Philomena”.
Shaya Labeuf is an American actor, familiar to the viewer from the thriller Paranoia (2007) and the blockbusters Transformers (3 parts). A real rising star. His Jerome in "Nymphomaniac" is elegant, but rather ordinary, patient.
Jamie Bell - an English film actor, played the role of a tough sadist in the film. Professionally engaged in ballet and tap dance. Actor-debutant has a number of prestigious awards. 2005 for Jamie is truly stellar, three films with his participation were released immediately. All characters played by him receive positive ratings from critics, which strengthens the reputation of the actor. In the film "The Nymphomaniac", his character is represented by obvious evil, but the hidden evil was embodied by the character of Jean-Marc Barr, who played a hidden pedophile.
Jean-Marc Barr - French actor. He has been working in the cinema and theater since the 80s. But the formation of Barr's creative personality was greatly influenced by continued cooperation with Lars. He has already starred in his paintings: "Breaking the Waves", "Europe", "Dancing in the Dark."
It is definitely worth noting performers of secondary roles - Connie Nielsen, Willem Defoe (known for the film "Antichrist"), Uma Thurman (Tarantino's muse) and Udo Kira.
Author's narration
When viewing a picture, the first thing that spectators pay attention to is the use of a proven literary device, when the author’s narrative is interrupted by the stories of individual heroes, moreover, relating to events of the past. This method of presenting the material was considered the best actors participating in the filming. “Nymphomaniac” has a proven structure: the flashback illustrated story about the sexual adventures of the main character is interrupted by commentary from the listener. In addition, the creator himself intervenes in the story with enviable frequency, either deliberately ironically dividing the heroine's confession into chapters with titles, either scattering printed captions all over the screen, or showing the bite of a fish coming from somewhere, then pointing to all kinds of references. All these authorial tricks are similar to the post-modern game, which Trier makes clear to the beholder that you should not take what is happening on the screen unambiguously seriously. However, he still manages to achieve a purely dramatic effect in the episode of the death of the father of the main character and cause hysterical laughter in a stunning scene with Uma Thurman.

Between first and second
It is no coincidence that the film was divided into two equivalent parts, because the viewer to draw any conclusions after reading the first without looking at the second would be at least stupid. But the small gap between the release of the first and second parts was justified not by production, but by exclusively aesthetic considerations. The first episode launched the spectator’s imagination mechanisms, provoked it quite powerfully, much more strongly than it is done in “soap operas”, the authors of which traditionally end their internal episodes sometimes for no apparent reason with sharp plot twists.
Novel with continuation
"Nymphomaniac. Part 2 ”(actors: Charlotte Gainsbourg, Stellan Skarsgård, Shia LaBeouf, Jamie Bell, Stacy Martin, Willem Dafoe, Mia Goth) - the continuation of the first part, in which the burning story of wasted and lost feelings comes to its end. The narrative of the second episode begins with the attempt of the main character Joe (now played by Charlotte Gainsbourg, and not the debutante Stacy Martin) to put family life above her sexual adventures. She honestly tries to settle down, breaks off relations with all lovers, enters into a civil marriage with Jerome (Shaya Labaff), they have a baby - the son of Marcel. But such a lifestyle is not for Joe. Soon she again goes into all seriouss, as a result, under the leadership of the mafiosi (Will Dafoe) she becomes a criminal.
This provocative fairy tale, a parable for adults, many contemporary film critics have dubbed an educational novel-upbringing. It annoys, angers, cheers, excites and scares, causes a lot of emotions, in which there is no place for calm and comfort. What else could you expect from Lars von Trier?
