Valery Ivanovich was born on August 28, 1939 in the family of a military man. Since childhood, the boy showed interest in medicine and, having successfully graduated from school, entered the Medical Institute. I.M.Sechenov in Moscow. After graduating from basic education in 1963, V. I. Chissov continued to receive education in clinical residency at the department of hospital surgery of the same educational institution, and after graduate school. It was there that he began his research work. In 1967 he defended his thesis on the topic: "Esophagomanometry on hernias of the esophagus and diaphragm and diverticulums of the esophagus."

A year later, Valery Ivanovich Chissov became a junior research fellow (and then senior) in the department of stomach and esophagus surgery of the All-Union Scientific Research Institute of Clinical and Experimental Surgery of the USSR Ministry of Health.

During these years, Valery Ivanovich began to develop surgical and conservative treatment of acquired and congenital pathologies of the diaphragm, cardia, esophagus and other areas. He reflected his research in this area in his doctoral dissertation entitled "Damage and fistula of the esophagus", which he defended in 1976.

Under the strict guidance of Valery Ivanovich Chissov, 46 dissertations were completed, including 27 doctoral theses and 19 doctoral ones. Thanks to his scientific developments, more than 40 inventions have been patented. It was he who developed the method of tissue and organ restoration after microsurgical autotransplantation in cancer patients.

Valery Ivanovich is also the founder of the method of intraoperative irradiation with the help of combination therapy for malignant neoplasms. This method allowed Chissov Valery Ivanovich in practice to almost completely exclude healthy tissues from the area of ​​radiation therapy.
