At the end of the consideration of the fact that this is a campaign, let us recall the religious campaigns of the 11-15th centuries.
Crusades
This name was given to a series of military campaigns from Western Europe, which were of a religious nature, directed against Muslims, but not only.
In a narrow sense, they speak of campaigns committed in 1096-1272. to Palestine under the sign of "liberation", primarily Jerusalem, with the Holy Sepulcher there, for wars with the Seljuk Turks.
In a broader sense, the Crusades are also understood as other campaigns that were proclaimed by the popes. Among them are later ones held for the conversion of the Baltic pagans to the Christian faith. And also with the aim of suppressing anticlerical and heretical movements in Europe, such as Hussites, Cathars and others.
One of the true inspirers of the mass campaign was Peter of Amiens, a poor hermit called the Hermit, born in Picardy. When he visited Golgotha and the Holy Sepulcher, he saw all kinds of oppression of his brothers by faith in Palestine. This raised a strong indignation in his soul. Peter went to Pope Urban II in Rome, and after that, barefoot, in rags, carrying a crucifix in his hands, he went across Europe, where he preached about a campaign in order to free Christians and the Holy Sepulcher.
Touched by his eloquence, ordinary people mistook the hermit for a saint. They considered it fortunate to capture a piece of wool from his donkey as a keepsake. So the idea was very widespread and became very popular.
