For more than three decades, viewers have been enjoying the brilliant acting of the actors in the famous film âD'Artagnan and the Three Musketeersâ, directed by Jungwald-Hilkevich. Even today he looks in one breath, and the songs of Maxim Dunaevsky, included in the picture, have long become almost folk. Well, the actors of âThree Musketeersâ are still loved and adored by the audience throughout the country.
First there was a performance
However, not everyone knows how many backstage excesses and upheavals happened during the filming of the adventures of the musketeers. The Russian version of the novel in a theatrical production was released thanks to the efforts of director Alexander Tovstonogov, composer Maxim Dunaevsky and playwright Mark Rozovsky. Once the performance was watched by one of the Goskino officials and gave a âgreen lightâ to the musketeers on the blue screens.
Few people know that the famous movie was gathering dust on the shelf for almost a year, and all because the director, screenwriter and songwriter had disagreements, which were only managed through the court.
The director was on the beat
Georgy Yungvald-Khilkevich, who almost in every detail knew the content of the novel by the French writer, agreed to direct the masterpiece.
Actors of the "Three Musketeers" were selected by him personally. The director, almost without hesitation, invited the eminent actor Oleg Tabakov to play King Louis. There was no doubt about Jungwald-Khilkevich regarding the candidacy for the role of Anna of Austria - the actress Alisa Freindlich masterfully reincarnated in her. The director considered this acting couple the key to the success of the future adventure epic about the musketeers. Maxim Dunaevsky had to do a certain job: he rewrote the music, but the texts of Ryashentsev remained unchanged. They decided to shoot the picture at the Odessa film studio. The actors of âThree Musketeersâ rehearsed the main scenes in Lviv, Odessa, Khotyn Fortress, Svirzhsky Castle, Carmelite Monastery in Bethune.
Casting
So, some of the actors of âThree Musketeersâ were unconditionally approved by the director, but there was a difficult task - to pick up the rest. Although today itâs hard to imagine who, besides Mikhail Boyarsky, could play d'Artagnan so brightly and talentedly.
However, the tests carried out in 1977 could radically change the composition of the faces of the film âThree Musketeersâ. Actors who played key roles could be different. The candidates were considered candidates for Elena Solovey, Evgenia Simonova, Alexander Abdulov, Vasily Livanov, Igor Kostolevsky. The list is somewhat unusual, but it was in this variation that a Soviet film masterpiece could be created.
Mikhail Boyarsky
Boyarsky intended a different image - Count Rochefort. But fate had a different fate for him. Once he did not have time for a rehearsal. In turmoil and haste, the actor literally flew into the set like a torpedo, and of course, the director saw all this.
Then Jungwald-Khilkevich dawned: here he is - a real Gascon! Initially, this role was predicted by another, no less talented lyceum - Alexander Abdulov, who was to organically enter the movie âThree Musketeersâ, the actors for which were selected in the most thorough way. But the musical material was too much for him, and the role of d'Artagnan was entrusted to the one who was entrusted.
It is noteworthy that Mikhail Boyarsky was offered to reincarnate as Aramis and Athos, but fate decreed in a different way.
Igor Starygin
Actor Igor Starygin got on the set of an adventure film thanks to the patronage of Mikhail Boyarsky, who liked the work of Atos in the famous film We'll Live Until Monday.
And, in fairness, it is worth noting: Starygin did not disappoint Jungwald-Khilkevich, and he approved him for the role of one of the musketeers.
Benjamin Laughs
Why was the film D'Artagnan and the Three Musketeers so amazingly successful? The actors in it played simply magnificent, their skill of transformation was inimitable. This is one of the main reasons for the popularity of Soviet cinema hit. The director offered the actor Veniamin Smekhov the image of the brave Athos . But initially it was intended for another talented lyceum - Vasily Livanov. He passed the screen tests with brilliance, but at the crucial moment he could not come to the shooting. Hitch threatened with a real disaster. Jungwald-Khilkevich began an active search for a new Athos, and luck smiled at him: at the Taganka Theater he watches the graceful play of Veniamin Smekhov in the role of Woland and suggests that he reincarnate as a musketeer. As a result, the problem was resolved.
Valentin Smernitsky
Surely, among older people there are no people who would not watch the adventure movie âD'Artagnan and the Three Musketeersâ. Actors worked with maximum efficiency, which is why the film became a cult for the domestic audience. As for the image of Porthos, the director had little doubt that he would be brilliantly played by Valentin Smirnitsky. And here Jungwald-Khilkevich falls into the "top ten". Smirnitsky - a spilled musketeer!
Alexander Trofimov
The role of the schemer Richelieu was brightly and expressively played by actor Alexander Trofimov. Again, it was initially assumed that instead of him Mikhail Kozakov would act on the stage . One way or another, but the last job was found: he voiced the cardinal, since Trofimov was a stutter by birth, and Jungwald-Khilkevich could not entrust him with such a responsible mission. It is noteworthy that in the film the actor is only 27 years old, but the hero Richelieu is already 40.
Margarita Terekhova
Today, not many people know what budget has been allocated for the filming of the film "D'Artagnan and the Three Musketeers." The actors, of course, deserve a substantial fee for the work done.

Only now there is little money allocated for the picture. Nevertheless, the film turned out great! The quality of filming is at a high professional level. One of the key images - Milady Winter - was phenomenally and talentedly brought to life by actress Margarita Terekhova. And, again, this role was intended another - Elena Nightingale. However, she was "in position", and the shooting process did not stop thanks to Terekhova. However, instead of the Nightingale, Goskino officials wanted to promote "their" protĂ©gĂ© - actress Svetlana Penkin. But the director categorically refused to shoot her. And, in the end, the officials succumbed to the onslaught of Jungwald-Khilkevich and approved the candidacy of Margarita. The actors of the film âThree Musketeersâ were happy to work with Terekhova on the same set.
Irina Alferova
Constance Bonacieux was supposed to play Evgeny Simonov. However, the director was forced to approve Irina Alferova, otherwise the participation of Mikhail Boyarsky in the film would be in question. Jungwald-Khilkevich himself was not enthusiastic about the work of Irina. Today it is safe to say that the Soviet film about musketeers is better than their foreign counterparts, and not least thanks to the charming Alferova.
Many film critics believe that the film "D'Artagnan and the Three Musketeers", whose actors and roles were compared very carefully, deserves the highest rating.
Boris Klyuev
The notorious actor Boris Klyuyev brilliantly played Count Rochefort. It was assumed that this character would not be fencing on stage, so the basics of this art were not taught to Klyuev. However, in one of the scenes, the actor lost his temper and took out his sword, subsequently injuring Mikhail Boyarsky (almost hitting the cerebral cortex). But everything ended for the "Gascon" safely. Even the stunt director Nikolay Vashchilin said that the events developed according to a different scenario, and Boyarsky was not injected by Klyuyev, but by Vladimir Balon, who himself put on this episode, while Vashchilin was absent. Boris, however, insists that it was he who accidentally injured Boyarsky, since he appeared on the set "under the fly."
Staging
The film "Dartanyan and the Three Musketeers", the actors "of which, no doubt, did their job qualitatively, turned out spectacular and thanks to professionally set tricks, Nikolai Vashchilin distinguished himself here. Neither Boyarsky, nor Smekhov, nor Starygin, nor Smirnitsky, nor other actors had the right to perform tricks on their own. The actors of the film âD'Artagnan and the Three Musketeersâ had to strictly comply with safety regulations on the set. Jumping from a height, flying in the air, should have been performed by people specially trained for this.
Since the film was low-budget, some of the details were made from improvised materials. In particular, the director himself made âdiamond pendants for the queenâ in his hotel room.
Conclusion
The film "D'Artagnan and the Three Musketeers" has long been a classic of Soviet cinema. Unfortunately, the productions of the 90s of the last century about the adventures of the musketeers twenty and thirty years later did not have the same success as the first movie about d'Artagnan and his friends. In Ukrainian Lviv, there is even a special route called âThe Musketeer Lvivâ, where you can wander around the places of âmilitary gloryâ of the filmâs heroes.
