Change of surname after the wedding: all the pros and cons

Each girl after marriage asks herself a question - to change the name in the passport or not. Someone decides to leave their own, and someone takes the name of the husband. The reasons for this choice can be completely different:

  • these are family traditions ;
  • replenishment will soon occur in the family;
  • spouse insists on a change of surname.

A change of surname after the wedding will entail making changes to the most important documents, such as a civil passport, health insurance policy, identification number, employment record, driver's license and many others. Taking into account the Russian mentality and attitude towards paperwork, amending documents takes a fairly long period of time. Crazy queues in offices, the nuances of filling out applications and collecting the necessary data lead some to breakdowns.

Depending on the wishes of the married, the marriage certificate indicates the common name or former names of each spouse. A single surname for both spouses is chosen either by the bride or groom, by their mutual consent, or they take a double. In accordance with the law, the surname of the spouses may consist of a maximum of two premarital persons, connected by a hyphen. A change of surname in the passport is indicated by a special mark in the necessary paragraph during the filling out of the application for a desire to enter into marriage.

On the wedding day, a passport is placed on the passport of the person who changes the last name, indicating that after a month has passed, this document will be considered invalid. A marriage certificate is already issued for a new surname.

Documents that are not subject to change include: documents on real estate ownership, certificate of higher education (diploma). If necessary, a certificate of marriage conclusion is simply attached to them.

The most important thing to remember is that the period for exchanging documents is limited, because if you forget about it, you will find many unpleasant surprises in various life situations.

Surname change after the wedding: positive and negative sides

The plus is that:

  • many female persons believe that a common surname brings together spouses. In turn, their husbands do not dissuade them, and some are even offended if the girl refuses to take his name;
  • a common surname for all family members is convenient, especially if you are waiting for replenishment. After all, mommy will definitely not have to prove that this is her child, and she just has a different surname. And usually all children bear the name of their father;
  • You can change any dissonant surname to beautiful or spectacular.

The downside is that:

  • will have to make changes to many documents. Just imagine, I want to enjoy the first month of married life, and here this red tape;
  • if the wife took place in the professional sphere and is quite popular under her own name, a change of name after the wedding will be unfair;
  • if the future husband has an inconsistent surname that does not combine with either the name or surname of the bride or she does not like her at all, it is best to leave everything unchanged. After all, if the bride, having changed her last name after the wedding, becomes Zhanna Mukhamedovna Plevako, no requests from the groom and certainly his relatives can become an occasion to make such a sacrifice.
  • As for relatives. The family and close relatives of the groom may be offended even more by himself if the newly formed couple retains different surnames. Do not let you press and firmly indicate the position that it is up to you to decide whether or not to change.

So, in each process there are pros and cons that should not overshadow your honeymoon, so a change of name after the wedding should not lead you to despair.
