The Atlantic Ocean is the second largest water reservoir in the world. But, despite its full flow, it is very scarce on the presence of small lands compared with the Indian or Pacific oceans. The islands of the Atlantic Ocean are usually divided into northern and southern, the border between which passes, as you might guess, through the equator. Among them are huge, located near the mainland, and miniature, which form among themselves archipelagos and entire arcs. We will consider the main archipelagos from the largest to the smallest.
Greenland
First, find out which islands in the Atlantic Ocean are the largest. Undoubtedly, the first largest is Greenland, where the state of the same name is located. This island is considered the largest in the world, and its area is 2 130 800 square kilometers. Despite the fact that all the lands of Greenland are covered with snow and glaciers, the climate here is changeable. In the southern part, the temperature is kept within 7-8 degrees below zero. In the north, the thermometer drops below the 25 degree mark. The most densely populated city is located in the west of Greenland and is called Nuuk or Gothob.
British
These are large islands of the Atlantic Ocean, which are located in the North-West of Europe. On the one hand, they are washed by the North Sea, on the other - the Atlantic. Two states settled on these lands - Great Britain and Ireland. The archipelago includes two islands of the same name, which are the largest. Also included are the small Shetland Islands, Orkney and Hebrides. All of them are in cold waters, because summer holidays are not popular here.
West Indies
In the West Atlantic there is one large archipelago, which the Europeans who conquered America, called the West Indies. It includes three groups of islands: Bahamas, Greater Antilles and Lesser Antilles. The first consists of over seven hundred islands, among which no more than thirty are inhabited. The Bahamas are considered the most expensive recreation area in this region, the main center of entertainment for adults and children. Small Antilles of the Atlantic Ocean - a kind of arc, consisting of small islands. The tourism sector is well developed on them, but some of them are uninhabited. The islands of the Atlantic Ocean, which are located nine hundred kilometers from the US coast, have a mysterious name - Bermuda. The beach season opens here in April, in winter the air temperature drops to 15 degrees Celsius. The islands are not a densely populated region, however, it is a full-fledged province, which is under the rule of the British crown.
Off the coast of Antarctica
The South Sandwich Islands are the coldest islands of the Atlantic Ocean. The list of territorial units that are part of the archipelago consists of 11 items. Among them, the largest island is Montague, which is located in the central part of the archipelago. These lands are uninhabited, since the air temperature here is almost always very low. In winter, the thermometer drops to -30 and below, it is constantly snowing. Summer lasts several days, and the absolute temperature maximum, which was recorded here, is +8 Celsius. The islands are in the possession of the United Kingdom since their discovery by James Cook.
Paradise Tourist Area
But the Canary Islands are one of the few places where you can relax in the waters of the Atlantic paradise all year round. They are located a little west of Africa and fall into the tropical climate zone. The Canary Islands of the Atlantic Ocean are famous for their eternally summer weather. At any time of the year, the air temperature here does not rise above 30 and does not fall below 25 degrees, and then in the winter, and in the summer you can comfortably sunbathe, swim and have fun.
Burning land
Summing up, it is worth talking about the origin of these lands. Almost all the islands that we listed above are volcanic islands of the Atlantic Ocean. This category includes all archipelagos consisting of small islands that are located both near the equator and near the poles. Volcanic lands include the Bermuda archipelago, the Canaries, the Bahamas, the South Sandwich Islands, the lands of the Cape Verde and many others.
