“A smile will make everyone brighter” - everyone has known this line since childhood, but is it fair? Is a smile always something that brings light and joy. Could there be other options?

A smile is a mimic movement of the face, lips, eyes, showing a disposition to laugh, expressing greetings, pleasure, or mockery. Naturally, not only these, but also other feelings. There are as many smiles as emotions in a person’s arsenal.
It is clear that when we see a pleasant and unpleasant person, we smile differently. When we are talking with the boss or subordinate, our facial expression is difficult to compare.
A smile brings not only light, as Little Raccoon thought, it also wreaks havoc and horror. There are no positive emotions in the smile of the Joker or Hannibal Lecter ...
Types of smiles
Naturally, the first thing that comes to mind is mimic movements expressing different spectra of human emotions:
- calm;
- Nervous
- funny;
- sad
- sincere;
- insincere, taut;
- evil;
- kind.
The reader must add the word “smile” to each adjective so that we do not repeat.
There are also professional smiles that imitate certain emotions, we list only professions, and the reader himself will understand what is at stake. So:

- stewardess;
- waiter;
- administrator.
Naturally, there are only the brightest professions, whose smiles come up almost automatically in the imagination. It is known that a market economy turns almost everyone involved in the service sector into a person-smile. And this is inevitable. These are the rules of the game.
Synonyms
The object of our study is not so easy to replace. Because he does not have one hundred percent replacements. But first a list, then comments:
- laughter;
- a grin
- smirk
- grin (this is the "smile" of the animal).
All these synonyms are relative, because neither a grin nor a smirk are good, sincere, they always hide some kind of subtext, usually not good. Laughter is not a smile either; laughter and a smile are different degrees of expression of emotions.
Grinning, if it does not concern the animal, also cannot be recognized as a full synonym. Thus, we can conclude that there is no synonym for the word “smile” in the language, and this is correct. A smile should be no alternative!
National differences between Russia and America
In the series “Colombo” in the episode “Colombo loses patience,” at the very beginning it says: “Nothing can happen in this country until someone sells something.” Thus, it is indirectly recognized that Americans are a people engaged in trade. Therefore, a smile on their faces is a direct consequence of a national character.
Of course, it would be possible to deduce from this circumstance that they supposedly have a better life, and therefore a smile appears on their faces more often than Russians, but all this is to a certain extent relative. There are enough problems in the West. So they decided: a smile on duty always plays and shimmers on the face.
Russians have concentrated and gloomy faces, and sincere smiles. True, we are already learning programmed politeness. So what to do? These are the realities ... If you do not smile, then it will not be easy to sell, both services and goods.
By the way, even a separate book was published about the unsmilingness of Russians, the Canadian writer Luke Jones wrote it, and it is called Why Russians don't smile (“Why Russians do not smile”). We do not know if there is an official translation into Russian, but it would be interesting to look at ourselves from this side.
I would not want the reader to conclude that Russians are better than Americans, because they are more honest, because they do not smile for no reason, they need a reason. No need to think so. The absence or presence of a smile on duty on the face is just a national peculiarity or a cost to the profession. Remember, for example, that comedians are usually the saddest and most caustic people in the world, for example, Kurt Vonnegut or Mark Twain. Maybe they are only joking to turn darkness into light.
Smile - it doesn't annoy anyone
And yet, for all the horrors that the "mimic movement of the face, lips, eyes, showing location" may conceal, we urge readers to smile more and more affably, because there is no harm from this, but a whole wagon is useful.
Of course, no one asks to forget about our national severity, but, sacredly honoring the NLP covenants, let’s say: what is outside, inside. In other words, if a person walks gloomy all the time, then even great joy in his eyes will fade and fly around like trees in autumn, and eternal winter will reign in the soul. No one is interested in such a development of events, because it does not bear any benefit: neither psychological nor commercial. On the contrary, sheer losses.
The recipe works and vice versa: if a person smiles, then "everything is not so bad for today," and there, you look, it will become easier for others. It is impossible to live next to a person who is gloomy all the time. Remember the film by George Danelia "Tears dripping."
