Despite all the attempts of society to educate worthy citizens, the moral character of a particular person depends on many circumstances. Yes, and interlocutors from time to time try to screw an unseemly characterization of those who they do not particularly like. Because of what “cheeky" is to this day an actual word, the meaning of which for many contemporaries remains not fully disclosed. What does it mean, what degrees of disrespect does it have, and where did it come from? An ordinary explanatory dictionary will answer all questions!
Interpretations and related terms
The concept is exclusively colloquial, and can be used in official correspondence only in relation to well-known people, otherwise it serves as a clear insult. It indicates the maximum rudeness of the person, unceremonious behavior and the absence of the slightest hint of shyness. Neglect of status, etiquette, and other social norms gives the right to capacious naming. Synonyms are definitions:
It is periodically used without reference to the person to indicate explicit censure. And then the meaning of the word "impudent" approaches standard swear words as part of reduced vocabulary, less aggressive compared to abusive statements. Not the best option for business negotiations.
The concept under study is closely connected with unceremonious acts, but there is its one-root version - “hunter”. It is found much less often, sometimes acquires a playful connotation and indicates one whose actions are clearly regarded as obscene. Frank flirting with a married lady or an attempt to kiss a new acquaintance are vivid examples of dubious behavior.
Origin and related words
The definitions mentioned above come from the common Proto-Slavic root. Also, Fasmer attributes to them a “sneak” (or a flatterer). The prefix plays the key role in the final interpretation. Verbs are called close:
- grooming - show care, tenderness;
- naughty - have fun, joke, bully.
Surprisingly, in East Slavic languages you can find terms with the most unusual decoding. Bulgarians say:
- “Okhalen” to call someone successful or prosperous;
- "Cool" to indicate a satisfied person.
And in Serbian culture, a one-root characteristic is used in relation to arrogant citizens.
Communication and decency
Be careful what you say. Do not use the classic "impudent", it is a bad form. Since ancient times, negative feelings and emotions have been laid in it. Let today in various theatrical productions and series, a word is twisted to give the heroes sublime refinement, to create an old flera, but it remains abusive. Try to replace it with a less sonorous synonym, but rather humble pride and try to smooth out the conflict situation.
