Ceylon is located east of the southern point of Hindustan and is separated by the Strait of Polk and the Gulf of Mannar. The closest neighbors of the island are India, China, Nepal, Bhutan, Tibet and the Maldives.

Sri Lanka gained independence in 1948 and had the name Ceylon. In the same year, the flag of Kandy (the ancient kingdom) was adopted, which depicted the Sinhala lion. The flag changed several times. Sri Lanka has long been ruled by England. The Kandy flag was used until 1815. In the XV-XVI centuries, the rulers of Ceylon used a red flag, which depicted a golden singh (lion) with a sword in his right paw. The image of the Sinh is associated with the name of the people of the island. There is a legend according to which Prince Singhat strengthened the Sinhala dynasty in the 1st century BC. e. and expanded its influence.

In 1517, the naval forces of Portugal captured the port of Sri Lanka - Colombo. They built a well-fortified fortress, and in 1720 the emblem of the city appeared. The emblem depicted a fighting elephant with crossed arms.

In 1951, changes were made - stripes of green and orange were added. Ceylon was renamed Sri Lanka in 1972, and fig trees (paypula) were added to the flag.
