Plot
The story begins in 1905 in Ireland. Serviceman Percy Fosset with a well-aimed shot kills a deer. In the evening he is served on the table to the secretary, and in his heart the man hopes that he will have mercy and give him the long-awaited promotion. But this does not happen. A year later, Fosset goes on an expedition to end the territorial dispute between Brazil and Bolivia. He has to make a map. The man hopes that at least this business will allow him to advance in the service. Having met with his adjutant Henry, he goes to uncharted territories of Eastern Bolivia. In the settlement, he hires guides and the detachment advances.
During the trip, they are attacked by natives. Native American tells Percy a story about a lost golden city. It is just located in these parts and the locals thus protect their secret. Having lost several people from the detachment, Fossett receives a warning from the guide - all the British will die in this campaign. In the evening, he receives a letter from his wife, from which he learns that his second son was born. Every day the detachment is losing more and more of its members. People die of hunger and go crazy. The conductor escaped safely, leaving them to certain death. Percy manages to shoot a boar, which saves the life of his people. But at the same time he finds fragments from ancient clay objects. He understands that the Indian was right, and the city really exists.
Upon returning home, Fossett receives recognition and the title of a great explorer. He tries to tell the community about his findings, but he is advised to be silent about this fact. Like, he could be damaged by the mind from the trials, and the pottery he just imagined. But his words interested a certain Mr. Murray. He offers to make a joint expedition and find the lost city. A year later, a large detachment led by Percy again arrives in Amazon. This time, too, the Indians fired at them, but Fossett managed to negotiate with them. The leader told him that the city really exists, but no one knows where exactly it is. The campaign has to be urgently curtailed due to the wound of Murray. As soon as he got home, Percy was forced to leave again - the First World War began.
After 10 years, he returns to his thought - to find a golden city. The eldest son Jack supports his father - he heard this story for many years and now intends to go in search with his father. The new expedition gives good results - the Indians talk about the existence of a cave with ancient clues. Jack and Percy are captured by the bloodthirsty Indians and realize that the end of their journeys has come. After the rite they will be killed, and no one will know about it.
The wife has been waiting for the return of her husband and son for many years. Numerous expeditions have not found researchers. Only after a long time she was given the compass of her husband and said that he is alive and lives with his son in the country of the Indians. Nina does not believe this, because she does not know anything about the last words of Percy. He promised that if he found a city, he would stay there forever and be able to transmit the compass as a sign of a successful outcome.
