Kalmyk knot: knitting methods, application

A knotted knot, or another name - the Kalmyk knot, is a convenient, durable self-tightening knot that can be easily untied. It is mainly used in the fleet, although it was invented in the steppes of Kalmykia far from the sea. In any of the foreign manuals on knitting knots, the knot is not mentioned, and foreign sailors do not know how to tie it.

It can be fastened in the following way:

  • for any item it is necessary to get a cable running end;
  • from the end of the cable you need to step back a little, then take it with your left hand on top, so that the thumb is directed at itself;
  • on top of the left fist, with the right hand, put the root end to where the chassis will be located;
  • about a fist to make a 360-degree revolution by the root part;
  • the left hand should move the root end under the root lobe of the loop;
  • at the same time, circle the running end around this part of the rope, clasping it with your fingers;
  • make a loop from the running end and pull it through the root end hose located on the left hand;
  • tighten the resulting knot with the root end.

The Kalmyk knot holds well and can be untied instantly by pulling on the running end. In order for the knot to not untie immediately, you need to skip the running end into the loop, but you do not need to fold it in half. With this method of knitting, a Cossack knot is obtained.

Application

  • To tie the casting end, which is served from the ship to the pier.
  • For feeding tools and other items to the masts and overboard.
  • For fastening to the reins bridle.
  • For tying horses in the stable.

how to tie a knot
Kalmyk knot is a maritime knot. There are many different, but no less important nodes that are often used. For example, fishermen use them to weave fishing nets.

What are fishing nets for?

The network is convenient in that you can fish without being nearby. Each fisherman can connect the network if desired. They are knitted from a fishing line or nylon cord. The net is less durable from the fishing line, but it is easy to remove the fish from it. The net is much stronger from the nylon cord, but it can get confused when the catch is taken out of it.

Nets are also available in fishing stores with various mesh sizes, but they require some equipment, which is not very convenient. It’s best to connect the network yourself, taking into account your desires, than to find the one on sale.

Knitting fishing nets

In order to weave a network, the following materials will be required:

  • rope (fishing line or kapron thread);
  • sinkers;
  • floats.

Ropes should be selected so that the net can withstand the intended production. The fishing line is suitable for fishing nets, and the kapron thread is suitable for landing netting and samolov.

Floats and sinkers must be round in order not to damage the net. And to increase the service life they are painted or varnished. They are mainly used on fishing line networks, which are called entangled. The floats are fixed not far from each other on top of the net, and weights from below. Light floats are used as floats: wood, polystyrene foam or birch bark, and heavy ones — metal or burnt clay — are used on sinkers.

Manual netting method

Manual weaving of networks is carried out using a shuttle. This tool is easy to do on your own, its length is 10-15 cm. The shuttle serves as a needle, and a fishing line or thread is wound on it. One end of the shuttle is pointed, and it has a slot, and the other ends with a double-arm.

The fishing line or cord is easily wound around the shuttle. At the end of the cord make a small loop and cling to the tongue. The cord is led down to the recess, leading from the rear side to the tongue, grasped and pulled from the front side through the recess, so wrap the entire cord.

In addition to the shuttle, you will need a template. It is a plate that resembles a schoolboy’s ruler, half the width of a network cell. For the manufacture of the template using plastic, wood or some other material. In addition, you need a strong loop of wire, to which the cord is attached during weaving. The hinge is usually attached to the wall.

When making tools yourself, it is necessary to carefully process them with sandpaper to eliminate all burrs. In this case, the cord used will not be damaged.

How to tie a knot for the manufacture of nets:

  • enclose the cord from above and below from the template;
  • pass the shuttle through the previous loop and bring it back to the template, holding the thread with your thumb;
  • thread the shuttle between the first two cords;
  • tighten the knot.

Each subsequent node is performed similarly. The number of cells dialed with common sides should correspond to the height of the grid. Then, in each row, new cells will be knitted to them, forming a network web. After completion of the first row, a strong cord is pulled through its cells and its ends are fixed. The fabric is knitted further.

Knitting on a special machine

When using a machine for weaving nets, their manufacturing time is reduced. There are several types of machines. The most popular is a device in which the case and the shuttle are made of aluminum pipe. In front of the shuttle is a slot for the passage of the thread, as well as an oblique cut, which is located at an angle of 45 degrees. At the end, there is a recess similar to a cone with a depth of 0.25 cm, in which the bobbin is fixed. This item is made of bronze and moves freely inside the shuttle. A stroke limiter is provided for the latter.

Weaving networks on the machine begins with the fact that the bobbin is inserted into the shuttle and closed with a stopper. The shuttle is inserted into the housing until it stops forward with a stopper. Using a machine for knitting, the thread should be held over the template, and then underneath and then threaded into the previous loop. The cell thread, as a rule, passes under the shuttle, and comes out from above it. Pressing the thread with your thumb, the shuttle is pulled to the template. Move the shuttle to your left and thread it, grabbing one or two threads. Pull the thread towards you and proceed to knitting the next cell.

Knitting knots used for weaving networks

For a beginner, it can be difficult to master knitting for fishing nets. There are many varieties of knots for knitting nets with different names: direct, regular, reverse, clew, double, one-and-a-half, single and others.

Each fisherman tries to keep the secrets of knitting skills. The skill of the knitter and the value of the knot lies in the fact that a single knot does not open when stretching the loop with your hands.

Let's consider in more detail how to tie a knot for knitting nets using a shuttle:

  1. Single. It is necessary to take ten to twenty meters of a thick kapron thread and throw it on a small shuttle. Tighten the loop of any size firmly at the end of the thread. Opposite the eyes of a seated person, drive a nail into the wall. Attach a loop to it at the node point. Thus, it turns out that a loop hangs from a nail and the thread goes to the shuttle. A knot is tied up, catching the loop from the bottom up by the shuttle.
  2. Shkotovy. This unit is easy to implement. It is mainly used as a maritime knot, but is also used to weave certain types of fishing nets. How to knit this knot is shown in the photo above.
