"Perfumes are real works of art!", Says Jean-Pierre Grivori, businessman and creator of the Salvador Dali perfume brand.
Yes, yes, this brand was created not by the master of surrealism, but by another person.
However, the Maestro himself still participated in the creation of the very first and subsequent fragrances, but more on that later.
Jean-Pierre Grivori to meet with Salvador Dali
After graduation, the young Jean-Pierre got a job in a company that exported colognes. In those days, middle-class perfumes did not exist, there were very expensive perfumes and very cheap colognes.
Women, if they wanted to smell decent, had to save up money for perfumes. Or use cheap colognes that do not add lady chic.
Jean-Pierre suggested that his bosses create perfumes for women so that they would not be so transcendental, but they answered him: “Who are you? You were hired here to export our colognes. So export! ”
Then Jean-Pierre decided that he would create the middle-class aromas, and then women would not have to save up money for a good aroma.
He opened the company Cofinluxe and began to collaborate with novice perfumers, who by now have become eminent masters.
In 1978, a brand was created, which is also known in the countries of the former socialist camp - Cafe-Cafe. The brand quickly gained success, and for the greater popularity of spirits, a legend was invented: this is perfumery for intellectual women.
In the early 80s, inspired by the extraordinary success of his products, Jean-Pierre decided to swipe at something more.
And he wrote a letter to Salvador Dali himself. In a message, Jean-Pierre offered the Master cooperation.
Salvador Dali, quick reference
An artist-painter (one of the classics of surrealism), writer, screenwriter, actor and jeweler Salvador Domenech Felip Jasint Dali and Domenech, Marquis de Dali de Pubol was born in Figueres (province of Girona, Catalonia) in 1904 in a wealthy notary family.
From childhood, the boy grew up quite impudent and had eccentric behavior and studied poorly. Only his father could somehow influence him.
At the age of 5, it turned out that the boy has the ability to draw.
"Surrealism is me."
Around 1929, the young Salvador Dali adjoins the surrealists. Surrealism is a trend in art that appeared in the 20s of the twentieth century.
“Sur” means “above”: supra-realism. The combination of sleep and reality. Usually the surrealists were carried away by the works of Freud. They believed that in their paintings, poetry, films, they are exempted from nightmares.
One of Dali's most famous works is The Persistence of Memory, written in 1931.
Jewelry work
In addition to the fact that Dali was an artist and actor, he realized his extraordinary talent in jewelry. Unusual jewelry was made according to his sketches. For example, the Queen of Spain, Sophia of Greece, owns this brooch-watch “Eye of Time”.
Watch brooch "Persistence of memory." Made of gold, diamonds, black enamel.
Based on the famous painting, about which Gala said: “Having seen her once, she will not be able to forget about her”
Brooch “Ruby Lips”. By the way, thanks to this brooch, the line of perfumes Salvador Dali Rubylips was created.
The meeting of two worlds
So, in 1982, Jean-Pierre Grivory wrote a letter to the genius of Dali, not hoping for an answer. At that time, the maestro was filled up with letters with offers of cooperation eminent fashion houses and perfume giants.
Imagine his surprise after 2 weeks, when the answer came! He thought that he would see in the letter what he had already heard: “Who are you?”, But read: “Ha, and you are a brave fellow!”
And here two worlds - business from perfumery and business from art - met. And they signed a contract to create the Salvador Dali brand.
For the first female spirits, Salvador Dali personally made a drawing of the bottle: these were the nose and lips of the Greek statue of Aphrodite. Dali believed that the nose and mouth are the tools of smell, so he suggested making the bottle in this form.
Dali wished that his work would form the basis for the design of the scents that he signed. The wish of the genius was fulfilled. And in the following bottles of the Salvador Dali brand, perfumes are made out based on his works.
When Grivori asked the Maestro if he had any preferences for aromas, he expected to hear something like: “I would like perfume to smell like a goat,” because in one of his books the artist admitted that he liked this smell. But here Dali surprised Jean-Pierre Maestro, saying that he would be glad if all the perfumes of the brand bearing his name had notes of rose and jasmine.
Jasmine was the maestro's favorite flower; he often painted with this plant behind his ear. And the rose was a favorite flower of his adored wife and muse of Gala (Elena Dyakonova).
Since then, many perfume compositions of the brand invariably contain rose and jasmine as a tribute to the great artist who gave his name to the brand.
