John Cameron Mitchell was born in El Paso, which is located in Texas. John's father was a retired Major General of the American Army, the actor’s mother is an emigrant from Scotland, working as a simple teacher. Mitchell's brother is also an actor and director. John grew up on the territory of military bases located in the United States. As a child, he showed great interest in art. The first role of John, is associated with the Virgin Mary. He performed at a Christmas production at a boarding school. Between 1981 and 1985 the future actor was diligently studying theatrical art at Northwestern University.
