Let's start our today's list of the best historical series with a mini series about England of the 19th century. "North and South" is a film adaptation of the novel of the same name by Elizabeth Gaskell, which touched on the events of the industrial revolution.
The young girl Margaret, who grew up in comfort and prosperity all her life, is forced to move with her family to the north of the country. Her new home is Milton, who is just going through an industrial revolution. Margaret makes new friends and meets the owner of a cotton factory named John. Heroes are confronted by a conflict of views and interests, but despite this, they begin to experience feelings for each other.
"A Little Light - at Candleford" (Lark Rise to Candleford, 2008)
Another English series about the 19th century, which tells about the everyday life of the inhabitants of the small village of Lark Rise and the inhabitants of the prosperous city of Candleford, located in the neighborhood. The main character of the story, a young girl named Laura, finds work in the city post office and moves from her native village. Her life in a new place is immediately filled with various events and acquaintances with interesting people. Poor and rich, love and betrayal, honor and cowardice, weaknesses and nobility - all this is part of the stories that Laura tells.
The heroes are ordinary farmers, military, nobles, artisans and other inhabitants of the English province.
Dostoevsky (2010)
We shot this series about the 19th century in Russia. The plot tells about the events that occurred during a rather large period of Dostoevsky’s life - from the moment the circle of Petrashevists was defeated until the writer created the novel The Brothers Karamazov. During this time, many interesting and sad events took place with Dostoevsky - this was a link, and the beginning of the affair with A. Suslova, and the death of the first wife M. Isaeva, and collaboration with a number of soil magazines, and acquaintance with A. Snitkina, and, of course the loss of a son.

Lady's Happiness (The Paradise, 2012)
The series is an adaptation of the famous novel by the French writer Emile Zola. The main difference from the original source is that the creators decided to transfer the scene of the events taking place on the screen from Paris to England.
In the center of the plot is a young girl named Denise. Once in a big city and not having any money or a home, she miraculously finds work in a special store for ladies. In a new place, Denise understands that a delightful showcase of an expensive boutique is just a facade, and behind it lies a completely different world, full of intrigue, love and powerful ambitions.
Taboo (Taboo 2017)
A dramatic television series of British production, which was based on a story written by actor Tom Hardy (he also played the main role).
The protagonist of the story is an adventurer named James Kesaya Delany. He spent about 10 years in Africa, after which he returned to England, taking with him fourteen stolen diamonds. Having inherited the land, he begins to make plans to create his own naval empire and establish trade with China. However, in order to realize his plans, James has to become a member of a dangerous game. Intrigues and intricacies, blackmail and conspiracies, the clash of interests of the British government and the East India Company - for the sake of his goal, Delaney is ready to do anything and more.
The Alienist (2018)
One of the newest TV series about the 19th century, the events of which occur in New York. Residents of the city are shocked by a series of brutal killings.
The victims are children, and with each new corpse found it becomes clear that they are being killed in more and more sophisticated ways. It seems as if someone is pursuing a terrible bloody ritual.
The bright trinity, consisting of the future president Theodore Roosevelt (and for now the incumbent police commissioner), the talented Alienist psychologist Laszlo Kreitzler (engaged in the study of mental pathologies) and criminal reporter John Moore, is taken to investigate the killings.
