The sixty-year activity carried out by the Scientific Center of Neurology of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences speaks for itself: as a research institute, it was already the leading medical diagnostic, scientific and educational center of the USSR, dealing with the field of neurology and neuroscience. The most modern diagnostic and research base was concentrated here, which was not inferior to any foreign centers of this profile.
History (briefly)
The main focus of the Scientific Center of Neurology of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences has always been on the latest medical technologies - the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of the most common diseases with special social significance. This is a stroke and its consequences, vascular dementia, Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, polyneuropathies, critical conditions in neurology, hereditary diseases of the nervous system and the like.
In the 90s, the Scientific Center of Neurology of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences opens from the Ministry of Health of Russia the Scientific and Methodological Center for Multiple Sclerosis, and the Scientific Center that studies stroke. There, as in very few clinics in the world, new high-tech treatment methods began to be implemented. In 2006, a very important event happened: the reorganization of the Institute and the accession to it of the brain research institute. Thus, the Scientific Center of Neurology of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences has become the largest institution in Russia, where they are engaged in clinical and fundamental neurosciences. A year later, the Research Institute of Neurology of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences received its current name.
Scientific achievements
Back in the forties and fifties of the last century, a whole system of measures was developed at the research institute, which greatly helped the fight in acute epidemic diseases - encephalitis and polio. The result of this work was an institution that stood out from the structure of a viral encephalitis and poliomyelitis RAMS considered as an independent research institute.
Meanwhile, pathogenesis was widely studied at the Research Institute of Neurology and methods of treatment of critical conditions developing as a result of various diseases of the nervous system were developed. This concerned neuroreanimatology, and Professor L. M. Popova became the founder of a new science. At the same time, the very first devices in the country for artificial ventilation of the lungs were developed.
Further way
In 1964, the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences oversaw the work of R. A. Tkachev, who created the Department of Clinical Neurogenetics, to this day the only one in the world. Here we have collected the data bank, which is the largest in the country, which allows you to use it in the most complex studies of molecular genetics. A multidisciplinary clinical diagnostic center was gradually created. Scientists of the research institutes presented the world with a new concept of imbalance of central neuromodulators and neurotransmitters, as well as disturbances in receptor-ligand balance.
They began to help stroke patients with the new phased care system developed at the Research Institute. A stroke register was created for the first time in the country. Insufficient blood supply to the brain was studied, and a new look at this problem made it possible to implement preventive programs. So, the workers of the metallurgical industry fell under the supervision of scientists of the Institute, since acute cerebrovascular accidents often occurred there from high temperatures.
Neurosurgical complex
The Scientific Center of Neurology (Moscow) has become the site for the development of the concept of hypertonic and atherosclerotic angioencephalopathies. Already by the 70s, pathomorphologists have described options for hypertensive leukoencephalopathy. Neurologists and neurosurgeons have developed indications for surgical intervention for carotid endarterectomy and other pathologies of the main arteries of the head.
The stereotactic operations were improved by Professor E.I. Kandel, he significantly expanded the scope of their application. Invaluable contribution
A Soviet and Russian scientist, one of the leading neurologists in the country, who is the director of the main medical institution in this field (FSBI Scientific Center of Neurology RAMS, Moscow), a doctor of medical sciences, professor and academician Mikhail Alexandrovich Piradov managed to carry out basic research on the most actual problems of neuroresuscitation and neurology.
These are coma, brain death, hemorrhagic and ischemic strokes, inflammatory and demyelinating polyneuropathies, cholinergic and myasthenic crises, brain protection from ischemia, restorative neurology and neurorehabilitation. A huge contribution was made by Mikhail Alexandrovich Piradov in the study of the pathophysiology of blood circulation, metabolism, focal and diffuse lesions of the brain. It was with his submission that the development of the Law of the Russian Federation on transplantation of human tissues and organs began after the development of criteria for brain death.
Mikhail Alexandrovich Piradov conducted priority research in immunology, morphology, neurophysiology of acute inflammatory polyneuropathies. He revealed the pathogenetic mechanisms of such diseases.
