The mystical horror or “Gothic horror” “Others” is filmed in the best traditions of canonical film works about ghosts and ghosts that live in ancient mansions. Nevertheless, as world film critics noted, compiling their reviews, the film "Others" has certain innovations. They consist in the fact that until the very final scene, the viewer can only guess which of the heroes belongs to the world of the dead, and which to the living. During the viewing of the picture, it is really really scary, but the finale will convince everyone who sees that there is no correctly built logic in the plot narrative. In this, as reviewers note, by publishing reviews, the film “Others” loses to the mystical picture of M. N. Shyamalan “The Sixth Sense”.
Creators
"Others" is a thriller of a novice Spanish director Alejandro Amenabar, a native of Chile. He was the third author’s project, the director at the time of filming was 29 years old. A world-famous movie star Tom Cruise, who this time acted as a co-producer, proposed to occupy the director's chair and become the author of the scenario for the project Amenabaru. By the way, all the musical accompaniment of the painting was also written by Alejandro Amenabar. Three characters of a talented film playwright praised the audience’s reviews. The film "Other", which touched upon the exciting theme of contact with the other world, did not disappoint the audience.
Without revealing plot intrigue
Without bumping into spoilers, we can only say that Amenabar made the plot a stunning assumption that not only the living are terribly afraid of the dead, but the unheard ghosts of the dead experience insurmountable horror before the "other" - messengers from other worlds. The director seemed to turn the situation upside down, fooling the viewer, who at the sight of the living experienced genuine horror, at the same time sincerely empathizing with the dead. But the playwright did not dare to go very far and build the story from the point of view of ghosts.
The perfect embodiment
The role of the main character, Grace Stewart, on the screen embodied one of the highest paid and sought-after film actresses in the world - Nicole Kidman. The actress's game has earned exclusively laudatory reviews. The film "Others" in her filmography follows immediately after the bright film "Moulin Rouge". Such a sharp contrast did not affect her game at all. After watching the talent of the actress, critics and ordinary lay spectators constantly admired. Kidman was able to extremely deeply and subtly feel the author’s intention and gracefully convey the atmosphere of cinema to the audience. To date, Nicole Kidman is perhaps the best Australian actress, the perfect embodiment of the true star of the Dream Factory. The actress is subject to all absolutely movie genres: from drama and musical to comedy and thriller. Infinitely feminine, elegant and fragile, over her entire film career, Nicole easily transformed into a variety of images.
Tuberculosis killed them
The actors who played the first roles, of course, should include Eric Sykes, Elaine Cassidy and Fionnul Flanagan, who embodied on the screen the characters of the servants, those who were killed more than half a century ago by tuberculosis.
Eric Sykes is a world-famous British comedian, one of the greatest artists of the second half of the 20th century, director and screenwriter, so it was strange enough to see him among the acting ensemble of the thriller. Sykes in the movie "Others" played the role of the gardener Edmund Tuttle. He began his career as an actor and screenwriter in the 50s, and in the 60s he already became a television star in Britain. After participating in several television comedies, the BBC becomes the first-rate movie star in British cinema. The characteristic manner in which Eric Sykes differs from his colleagues in the shop is to bring any situation to the highest degree of comic.
The role of the dumb servant Lydia was performed by the Irish actress Elaine Cassidy, who began acting in films since 1994, and in 2001 she was already recognized as one of the rising stars of the European film industry.
Fionnula Flanagan, who played the role of a nanny to Berta Mills, an Irish film, theater and television actress, began her career in 1965. Flanagan plays primarily supporting roles.
Summary
Given the successful debut of Amenabar (the film "Coursework"), it is easy to understand that the director is able to penetrate into the frightening areas of the human psyche and increase tension. In the thriller “Other”, the intentions and thoughts of the characters are much worse than the brutal atrocities that actually take place. During the viewing of the picture, ignorance of all motives and circumstances will frighten the beholder until, at the climax, everything is meticulously explained. This denouement of the picture became the subject of fierce debate between avid moviegoers: some felt cheated, waiting for a more enchanting ending, others considered the climax episodes to be the best in the whole story.
In any case, the thriller "Other" should be recommended for viewing to lovers of quality and stylish cinema.
