Orienteering in Udmurtia. Orienteering Federation. Sports tourism

Orienteering is a common type of competition. In order to participate in them, it is not necessary to have special training, just know the map. Therefore, schoolchildren, students, and even adults can engage in orienteering. Nevertheless, many do not know about this sport.

What is orientation?

This is the ability to read the map correctly in order to understand exactly where you are in the real world. Orientation will help to find not only an unfamiliar address in a strange city, but also the necessary territory in nature - in a forest, steppe, desert or even water. It is not for nothing that this sport is considered useful for life, because the ability to use the map and understand it even in an unknown place will not let you get off the road in a new city, get lost in a hike or get lost while traveling.

Competitions include racing and orienteering, so you need to be able to use the map and run well. You need to go the distance, meeting the set time, otherwise the player will be disqualified. The same awaits the participants who could not find all the control points they need.

The most interesting thing is that orienteering includes not only pedestrian competitions.

How are orienteering competitions in Udmutria?

The route consists of a start, a series of numbers and a finish. The beginning and end of the distance on the terrain are indicated by special tracks consisting of bright flags. Near the start are all the participants of the competition and are waiting for their moment. Each athlete must register before the start of the event and find out the time of his departure. Sometimes a zero start is introduced into the distance - part of the route that the participant must run before receiving the card.

All the designations necessary for the competition are printed on the sports card with maximum accuracy and always correspond to the contents of the legend. On the terrain, all the control points look the same - most often they are prisms made of bright orange or red fabric. But this does not mean that they are too easy to notice, since all KPs are arranged so that only a person who knows all the nuances of the card can find them. Orienteering rules allow you to hide numbers behind vegetation, buildings and objects of a different origin, the main condition is that all these obstacles be clearly marked at a distance. Another common trick to confuse the participant is a few checkpoints in one place. To take only the necessary KP, you need to carefully look at the serial and local numbers and always check the map legend.

Types of orienteering, common in Udmurtia

This sport is divided into various types. Orienteering, of course, takes place on a certain territory of the village. Before the start of the competition, the exact vicinity of the distance is established, which is strongly discouraged to go beyond. In tourism - orienting in natural areas - it’s more difficult to identify borders, so athletes must move strictly on the map so as not to get lost in an unknown area.

There is also a separate type of competition - the purple fence. This is orienteering, which is held inside the building, and not on the street. Competitions pass the minimum time, and for greater convenience electronic checkpoints are used.

Orientation may also vary in its methods. Most of the competitions combine work on a map with running or walking. Although not always orienteering is a distance that must be walked.

Water tourism is carried out by kayaking or kayaking - athletes who are good at swimming and managing these facilities can safely try themselves in this type of competition.

There are also skiing or skating competitions that take place in winter or at the very beginning of spring. They are attended by more experienced orienteers, who can not only follow the map, but also control their movement, as it is much more difficult than running or cycling. Residents of Udmurtia actively participated in such competitions in March 2017, but have not yet held such events in their republic.

The most difficult type of competition is the distance for cars. Orienteering in race cars is not very common, but it is really interesting. Its main difference from regular competitions is that participants do not have cards; they must independently find the required number of points.
