Thomas Robert Daily - British athlete, diver (diving), two-time world champion in diving from a 10-meter platform. He became the winner of the 2009 World Aquatics Championship at the youngest age - 14 years old. Re-won it in 2017. Also Thomas is a two-time bronze medalist.
Biography
The athlete was born on May 21, 1994 in Plymouth, Devon. He has two brothers - Ben and William. When Thomas was 17 years old, his father died of a brain tumor.
From early childhood, the guy was fond of swimming. The idols of Thomas Daily for diving were Canadian Alexander Despati and Briton Leon Taylor, who later became his mentor.
Thomas’s impressive skills were noticed by a trainer who gave diving lessons. He included the guy in the team. Thomas Daly held his first competition among boys in the national championship of beginners with dignity, having won a medal in only 8 years.
He was then invited to attend an event in Southampton. There he made a good impression, breaking all records among participants of his age. He jumped from a springboard located 1 and 3 meters above the water.
At the age of 10, Thomas became the youngest diving winner in a group of juniors (under 18).
In 2005, the athlete was invited to Australia, and he took 1st place in the competition in the age group of 14-15 years.
Education
From the age of 11, Thomas Daily studied at Plymouth College. He supported ChildLine's counseling service, which was run by the National Child Abuse Prevention Society. It soon became clear that the guy himself, at the age of 12, was bullied in his own school after participating in the Olympics. His father transferred Thomas to another school. Later, the athlete spoke about this in a local newspaper.
Thomas Daly was offered a scholarship at Brighton College, but his father refused to let his son go so far from home. Soon, the guy studied at Plymouth College.
Thomas finished his studies with marks “excellent” in photographs and “good” in mathematics and Spanish. He did not go to undergraduate studies, as he did not have time due to competitions.
Career
In 2007, Thomas Daly participated in the Australian Youth Olympic Festival, where he won a silver medal.
In 2008, he jumped from a 10-meter springboard and, thus, became the youngest winner. Also, Thomas Daly participated in the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, where he took 7th place. For good athletic performance, the BBC awarded him the Athletic Person of the Year Award.
In 2009, the diver takes part in sports competitions in China and Sheffield, where he breaks his own records for diving and takes third and second places, respectively.
Thomas Daily quarrels with his diving partner - Blake Aldridge, who was first injured in a club fight, which resulted in the disruption of the performances of both guys at the Olympics, and then talked on the phone between rounds. Upon learning of this, Thomas's father demanded a replacement for his son’s partner. Soon, the diver performed with Max Brick, who was 2 years older than him.
In 2016, Thomas Daly was paired with Daniel Goodfellow at the Rio Olympics. In the individual competition, the diver won gold. Together with their partner, they took third place at this World Diving Championship.
In the same year, at the FINA Diving World Championship, which consisted of four stages, the Daily received six medals.
In 2017, at FINA competitions, Thomas earned 1 bronze medal in Beijing, 3 bronze medals in Kazan, 1 silver medal in Guangzhou and 1 gold medal in Budapest.
At the 2018 Commonwealth Games, held at the Gold Coast in Australia, Daily and Goodfellow won gold when jumping from a 10-meter springboard.
