Summary: "Bride" Chekhov A.P.

Read A.P. Chekhov is a pleasure. Writing about him is a pleasure. We are inferior to him, offering the reader a work (summary) of Chekhov's ā€œBrideā€.

Somerset Maugham wrote that the sole purpose of an artwork is to entertain the reader. If at the same time he learns something or learns something, then this is good, but not at all important. At the same time, the classic of English literature idolized Chekhov. But the Russian writer himself, in turn, could not sign the words of his admirer, for his works always teach something. In order to understand what the composition we have chosen for the article teaches, it is necessary to present a brief summary of the chapters of Chekhov’s short story ā€œThe Brideā€.

Brief Summary Chekhov

Chapter one

A dinner party is being held in the provincial town, apparently in honor of the final decision on the fate of Nadi. Nadia is a girl of 23 years old, and since 16 she dreams of getting married. Praise be to heaven, a suitable bridegroom was found - Andrei Andreich (he is the son of a local cathedral archpriest). The house has a viscous atmosphere of general idleness. Nadia and her fiancĆ© do not work. Andrei Andreich graduated from the Faculty of Philology, but not only in a permanent, but in general has no place and business. In addition to young people, the dinner is attended by Nadi's grandmother, in whose hands the main capital of the family. Nadina’s mother (the wife of the grandmother’s deceased son) also leads a completely idle and meaningless life: she talks with her father Andrei about astrology and occult practices, cries over books, goes to bed early and wakes up late. And it seems to all of them that they live perfectly normal. Sasha, a distant relative from Moscow, has a different opinion on this issue.

Summary of chapters by Chekhov's Bride

He is not rich, so he needs to work. A Moscow guest arrives in a provincial town solely to improve his health: he is very ill, but he disgusts the whole life that the inhabitants of the house lead, and every year, when he arrives, he talks about this to Nadia, since he believes that only she is among all of them can still be saved. The rest were bogged down in idleness, like flies in amber.

The first chapter ends with a detailed description of the evening, then everyone goes home.

The work (its summary) Chekhov's ā€œBrideā€ begins with a completely prosperous picture, but then, in the course of the narrative, the structure of the life of the heroes gives cracks.

Chapter two

a n Czechs bride summary

A month or a little less is left before the wedding, but Nadia does not sleep at night, the reality in general seems to her somehow depressing. Surprisingly, she tries to share her doubts with her mother, and it turns out that they not only speak different languages with her, but also seem to live on different planets. For the first time, Nadia discovers the total dependence of her mother on her grandmother, her stupidity and her unhappiness. For the first time in all time, Sasha’s conversations about meaning, morality and other ā€œhigh topicsā€ fall on the fertile ground of girlish doubts about whether she is doing the right thing and getting married. So far, it only seems to her implicitly and implicitly that she is making a mistake. Nadia begins to timidly think about the possibility of studying in another city.

At this point, the story (and with it a brief summary) of Chekhov's ā€œBrideā€ gives the reader hope for some kind of intrigue, which, under the pen of the master, is about to reveal itself. It is good that the reader is not deceived in his expectations.

Chapter three

Chekhov bride chapter summary

If the chapters in this story by A.P. Chekhov had names, then this could be safely entitled "vulgarity and disgust."

In it, Andrei Andreich and Nadia inspect the house that they hired for them. The son of Father Andrei walks around the rooms and admires, and Nadia is troubled by him, and by these rooms, and by his endless empty talk and false self-flagellation, and from false repentance for being an idler. Nadya wants to go home all the time, and she also understands that she absolutely does not like Andrei (maybe she never loved), and even more: he hates her.

Returning home, she discovers that preparations for the wedding are disgusting to her. All this fuss, another dinner, showing only the exorbitant pride of a granny, is disgusting to her!

A distant relative - Sasha, apparently, also experiences similar feelings, so she decides to leave, but he is asked to stay for a while, and he gives in.

In this chapter, the product (summary) Chekhov's ā€œBrideā€ makes a sharp, though expected, turn. It becomes obvious that the life of the heroes will no longer be the same, and that all plans for the future, which were before, are no longer destined to come true.

Chapter four

The decision to leave immediately visits Nadia. She has a conversation with her mother, in which she admits that she does not love her fiancƩ, that she does not understand why her mother lives like this. The mother, in turn, is trying to appease her daughter, saying that everything will be fine. Nadia does not want to listen to her. Once again, she reveals all the vulgarity of the existence of her relatives. She runs to Sasha and asks permission to leave with him tomorrow. He is so glad that he starts dancing. Young people agree: Nadia will go to accompany him to the station, then she will go with him into the carriage (he will buy her a ticket), then she will reach Moscow, and there she will rush to Peter without him. North Palmyra will meet her with coolness and new scientific knowledge.

The reassured girl returned to her room and fell asleep.

This chapter is the most dynamic in the story, and all thanks to the fact that A.P. Chekhov fluently owns the pen. The ā€œBrideā€ (the summary fully conveys the emotionality of the moment) makes the reader tremble.

Chapter five

Quite small. It incorporates only the description of Nadina’s departure from home. The heavy rain that accompanies the girl’s escape is remembered. She recalls the failed nest with Andrei Andreich, the memory of this no longer stings and does not bother. Everything seems unimportant compared to the future heady free air.

In the fourth and fifth chapter reaches its peak and it successfully passes the story "Bride". Chekhov (a brief summary also does not allow this to be hidden) is a great master of his craft.

Chapter six and last

Bride Chekhov short story

In it, the narrative calms down and comes to a logical conclusion. Nadia, who has lived in St. Petersburg for about six months, is going home. The unrest has passed. Both mother and grandmother have already come to terms with the fact that their child has grown, and Nadia missed them. She also drove to Moscow to see Sasha. He was very sick. He spoke all about the same (about the importance of education, etc.), but his speech did not touch the girl’s hearts, and the distant relative himself seemed terribly provincial to her. Nevertheless, she warmly thanked him for what he had done for her.

Sasha told her that he would soon go to the Volga. His whole appearance and condition indicated that he did not have long to live.

Nadia safely reached home. The roads in the city seemed wide to her, and the houses seemed small. Grandmother and mother met her well. Cried for a long time. Nadia looked at the house and relatives with completely different eyes, like ghosts of the past. It seemed to the girl that on everything (the house, people) lies the seal of decay and decay. Nevertheless, she spent some time there (about a month). There she was overtaken by the news of Sasha’s death, and after that she left, not feeling the particular bitterness of loss, but anticipating the sweetness of a new life filled with content.

Such an article turned out, in the focus of attention of which was Chekhov. The ā€œBrideā€ (a brief summary of the chapters) on this we have studied fully. And what this story teaches, let the reader decide for himself.
