Actors of the film "Pompeii" played a serious drama on the screens: against the background of the death of the famous city, two of its lovers residents are trying to save their feelings. The creators of the picture fit in an hour and a half many storylines and spent $ 100 million on implementing the idea. But did the historical tape manage to catch the hearts of viewers and critics?
Short story, the creators of the picture
The film "Pompeii" takes place in approximately 79 AD Milo - the son of noble English - after many years of slavery falls into the great Roman city of Pompeii to fight in the walls of his amphitheater as a gladiator. In a new place, the protagonist meets the beautiful city woman Cassia. Despite sympathy, there can be no relationship between them due to differences in estate status. Communication with the girl ends for Milo with lash punishment.
The script of the film includes a whole panorama of the life of the city: the problems of slavery are raised here, and the cruelty of Roman senators is described, and the general mood in the city. However, everything - intrigue, evil, friendship, love and hate - disappears at one moment when the city is covered by a sea of fiery lava.
The actors of the film Pompeii are mostly unknown performers. Only Kerry-Anne Moss stands out from the general background, which is familiar to the audience in the Matrix trilogy.
The project was directed by Paul Anderson, creator of the Resident Evil franchise with Mila Jovovich in the title role.
Keith Harington as Milo
"Pompeii" is a film whose actors did not become familiar on large screens. For example, Keith Harington (starring actor) is known only to fans of the Game of Thrones series: the artist has been regularly filming this project for 6 years now.
Harington's successes in feature films are not great. In 2012, he appeared in the horror movie Silent Hill-2, and in 2014 he played a supporting role in the adventure fantasy Seventh Son.
The hero of Harington in the drama Pompeii is a certain Milo, the son of the leader of the Celtic tribe. The parents of the young man were brutally murdered by the Romans, and the boy himself turned into a slave.
For almost 17 years, Milo entertained noble Roman gentlemen, fighting in the arena. When the young man was transferred to Pompeii, on the stage of the local amphitheater, he was forced to fight with his own friend. For an innocent walk with her girlfriend, Milo was beaten with whips. The militant Celt’s patience overflowed, so during another gladiatorial battle, he rebelled against local Senator Corvus.
Unfortunately, it was too late to change anything: streams of fiery lava poured into Pompeii. Defeating his enemies, Milo died with his lover.
Pompeii (2014 film): actors. Emily Browning as Cassia
Emily Browning is an Australian model and actress. At the age of 10, she began her film career with the role of Opel Ritchie in the series Echo of Thunder. The era of the series continued for Browning until 2001. Then she got small roles in the comedy “The Man Who Sued God” and the thriller “The Ghost Ship”.
For the first time, Emily had a chance to collaborate with real Hollywood stars in 2003, when she entered the main cast of the film “Kelly's Gang”. Heath Ledger (Brokeback Mountain), Orlando Bloom (Lord of the Rings) and Jeffrey Rush (Frida) participated in the same project. Also, the name of the actress is often mentioned in connection with her participation in the action movie of Zack Snyder "Forbidden Reception". The tape turned out to be scandalous and was defeated by critics, but this only added fame to the director.
Actors of the film "Pompeii" Emily Browning and Keith Harington played lovers who were not originally destined to be together because of belonging to different social classes. However, the protagonists did not have to worry about this for long: soon the city died due to the fatal eruption of a volcano along with an unhappy young couple.
Actors, roles of the film Pompeii: Kiefer Sutherland as Senator Corvus
In any film, there is a main antagonist, which is the cause of all ills. In the drama "Pompeii" Kiefer Sutherland, the performer of the role of the Roman senator , acted as such an anti-hero.
Actors of the film "Pompeii" C. Sutherland and C. Harington embodied on the screens the images of long-standing opponents. First, Senator Corvus killed Milo's parents, and caused his long wanderings and humiliations. Then he continued to mock the young man already in Pompeii.
However, Milo, along with other gladiators, raised a rebellion against the Roman authorities. A few minutes before the death of Pompey, the warlike Celt personally killed the Roman senator, punishing Corvus for all his atrocities.
Kiefer Sutherland - Canadian, winner of numerous prestigious awards. However, all the notable works of the actor remained in the 80-90s. In the 2000s, one can single out the project “Taking Lives,” “Guard,” and “Pompeii.”
Other role performers
The actors of the film Pompeii are Kerry-Anne Moss and Jared Harris. In the historical film, they played the parents of Cassia, sweetheart Milo. Severus and Aurelius also, in a sense, became victims of Corvus: the Roman senator showed rather indiscreet attention to the heroine Kerry-Anne Moss, and in the finale killed her husband.
Kerry-Anne Moss is known throughout the world as the performer of the role of Trinity from the Matrix trilogy. Jared Harris has starred in many interesting films, including The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows.
Also in the frame you can see Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaj (“The Mummy Returns”), Jessica Lucas (“She is a Man”) and Pasu Vegu (“10 Steps to Success”).
The reaction of viewers and critics
The creators of the picture probably expected to collect a fabulous sum at the box office, as, for example, collected the peplum of “300 Spartans”. But that did not happen. Pompeii was able to cover the cost of filmmaking and bring Lionsgate on top of just $ 17 million.
In 2015, Kiefer Sutherland received the Golden Raspberry nomination for his role as Corvus. 80% of world movie reviews were written in a negative way.
Spectators also did not show proper loyalty to peplum. The audience was not impressed by the acting, and the story seemed too cloyingly beautiful and predictable. Enthusiastic reviews were heard only about the costumes, the scenery and the technical embodiment of the idea. Perhaps if the director and producers did not rely only on expensive special effects, and thought about the plot too, the picture would have a higher rating.
