Kamensk-Uralsky Metallurgical Plant: history, description, products

Kamensk-Uralsky Metallurgical Plant OJSC (KUMZ) was created with the aim of providing airlines with products from special magnesium and high-strength aluminum alloys. Today, the company has significantly expanded its field of activity. Its products are used in the aerospace industry, shipbuilding, transport engineering, energy, and in the construction industry.

The first steps

By the end of the 30s, aviation advanced significantly in development. Slow-moving plywood gliders were replaced by faster β€œall-metal” airplanes. To lighten the weight of the machines, light alloys based on magnesium and aluminum were used in the construction. For their manufacture in 1939, the USSR Council of Ministers decided to build the Kamensk-Uralsky Metallurgical Plant in the Urals. Work on its construction began in the spring of 1940.

During the Second World War, the enterprise received casting and rolling equipment from the Stupino Metallurgical Plant, evacuated from the Moscow Region. The first aluminum alloy plates were made in February 1942. And the first forged and extruded products were released in the autumn of 1943. Interestingly, the date of birth of a unique production is considered not the actual start of work, but a publication in the All-Union newspaper Pravda dated 05/05/1944.

Progressive development

After the war ended, the government acquired resources for the development of industry. Kamensk-Uralsky Metallurgical Plant (KUMZ) received high-performance rolling equipment, which allowed to significantly expand production capabilities. In 1949, the company began to produce aluminum cookware.

In the 50s, KUMZ increased production capacity. New plots were built:

  • Forging and Press (1951).
  • Foundry (1958).
  • Extrusion (1959).

In 1958, the plant made its first export supply, which included 2952 metric tons of rolled aluminum. In the same year, the production of magnesium rolled metal was carried out for the first time.

Assortment expansion

In the early 50s, the production of lightweight drill pipes made of aluminum alloy began at the Kamensk-Ural Metallurgical Plant. For this, a new specialized workshop was built.

In 1966, the company launched the first mechanized line for the production of heat exchangers. From that moment, KUMZ has been involved in the production of high-quality domestic and industrial refrigerators. 07/08/1978 the achievements of the team were awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor "For the successful development of production and the implementation of new technologies."

The plant participated (and is participating) in all domestic space programs. The factory workers are involved in the construction of ships of the Vostok, Voskhod series. The team participated in the implementation of the international programs Mir, Salute, ISS, Proton and others.

Time for a change

On November 30, 1992, the company was reorganized into OJSC Kamensk-Uralsky Metallurgical Plant. In 2007, the Chkalovsky project was launched, within the framework of which an innovative technology for the heat treatment of plates was introduced.

In 2011, KUMZ entered into contracts for the construction of a new rental complex consisting of rolling mills and sheet metal heat treatment systems. The total investment is estimated at half a billion euros. In the spring of 2012, after modernization, a unique 300 MN vertical stamp was launched.

Foundry

At the Kamensk-Uralsky Metallurgical Plant (KUMZ), the foundry section is one of the main. The raw materials for the workshop are pure aluminum, alloying components and aluminum scrap. The production is equipped with high-performance furnaces:

  • electric vacuum;
  • electric;
  • induction;
  • gas.

This allows the Kamensk-Ural Metallurgical Plant to independently provide other sites with high-quality forged aluminum alloys, slabs, and ingots. Experts have mastered the production of about 70 aluminum alloys according to Russian standards and more than 20 according to international standards (ASTM, EN, DIN).

Rolling production

The company is one of the few global manufacturers of aluminum-lithium alloys, as well as sheets of them. Kamensk-Uralsky Metallurgical Plant is equipped with one quarto hot rolling machine and two cold rolling machines.

In addition to plates with flat surfaces, KUMZ produces surfaces with notched treads that prevent slipping. They are used for floors of buses, trucks, railway cars, drill string.

In 2012, the plant installed a water-jet (waterjet) cutting torch. It allows you to cut rectangular plates into blanks of any, even the most complex shape. Specially processed aluminum plates and sheets are used by Airbus, Boeing, Bombardier in the assembly of aircraft.

Other production

The plant has 39 horizontal extrusion hydraulic presses with capacities from 500 to 12,000 tons. They are located in four buildings. The tool shop produces more than 20,000 types of aluminum profiles, 550 types of rods of various sizes, 850 types of pipes.

KUMZ blacksmith's production meets the needs of the leading Russian design bureaus Tupolev, Ilyushin, Sukhoi, Yakovlev, Antonov. The equipment includes hydraulic vertical forging plants from 1250 to 30,000 tons, a hydraulic forging press with a capacity of 6,000 tons, a radial ring stamping press. It produces 1,500 types of stamped products, 1,200 types of forged products and 1,600 sizes of rolling rings weighing from 0.1 kg to 3,000 kg.
