However, the situation is getting out of control, and one of the hunters John coolly kills his son Hugh, and at gunpoint forces the second hunter Jim to leave the wounded Glass to die in the cold, because the insidious John did not intend to spend time on him. However, in spite of everything, the main character does not die, as the traitor wanted. Hugh alone defies wildlife, all Native American tribes, and the harsh winter that has just begun.

But after it becomes clear that the true abductors of the girl were the French, with whom the Indians exchanged skins of various animals on horses. By coincidence, the protagonist meets the very daughter of the leader and saves her from the French. Their meeting took place at the moment when Hugh entered their camp in order to steal a horse from them. After some time, moving away from the chase of the Indians, Glass had to tear open the belly of his dead horse in order to spend the night there and not freeze from frost. As a result, the main character manages to get to the camp, where his group and the traitor himself in the person of John Fitzgerald temporarily settled down. After John found out about the return of Glass, he, without hesitation, robs his fellow tribesmen and rushes into the race.
