They called him a young man. That's a compliment?

Here comes the brave team of athletes. Will they be called "fellows"? Is the cadet taking the oath, is he a young man or not? He slapped the kid on the shoulder with a tattooed arm, young man, they say. What did he mean? Why is the newspaper outrageous fans called the word cognate with the fact that mothers praise children for good grades?

Let's deal with the word "well done".

Unfortunate Suffix

How is a young man different from a young man?

The fact that he was added morpheme -chik. The suffix of subjective assessment is called by his theorists of linguistics.

It forms:

  • nouns;
  • adjectives;
  • adverbs.

Their task is to express the speaker's attitude to:

  • subject;
  • featured;
  • quality.

And this is done by giving expressive appreciation and shades:

  • reduction;
  • increase;
  • affection;
  • irony
  • neglect
  • humiliations;
  • contempt.

For example, a brother turns into a brother by the addition of a dismissive - a person, a sparrow becomes an affectionate - a sparrow, and so on.

So the emotional coloring made of the "well done" "well done". This shade is dismissive. And never, when used correctly, is the word a compliment.

Who is the young man

Guilty of dressing up?

The word young man is sometimes used as a synonym for such words:

  • dandy;
  • petimeter;
  • dandy;
  • pshyut;
  • the whip;
  • Firth;
  • Fat
  • a bastard.

Common to these definitions is what they call men (and regardless of age), who attach too much importance to their appearance. But this does not make the word match in meaning.

The fact is that all these items have a negative connotation. Because those who are honored differ in hiding the inner emptiness:

  • posturing;
  • swagger;
  • impudence;
  • snobbery.

Therefore, the young men are called in the familiar tone. That is, their appearance and actions are so laid-back that they look impolite, violate generally accepted norms.

Well done this

In a folk song, on a hair dryer and in a crime chronicle

So it turns out that they called the "young man" - it was practically scolded. Who is so "impressed"? Suspicious types that seem to be something dangerous. Dodgers and hooligans, according to others, capable of crime and ready for it.

Another disapproving sound takes the word in the plural. Who did not hear the expressions of "atrocious or presumptuous fellows"? This means a crowd of someone's minions, ready to fulfill any order of the leader. Naturally, this is not a compliment at all.

And to be nicknamed the young man in the thieves' jargon, quick wit and experience are enough.

Nevertheless, in the interpretation that the dictionaries call the folk poetic, “young man” has a slightly different color: strong and brave, firmly built, daring, in one word. After all, it’s sung: “A young man is walking along the street, and along a wide, remote one”.

You cannot throw words out of a song, as they say. But is it worth it to romanticize external dare, beauty and physical strength, unbalanced by internal virtues? This, apparently, is the personal choice of the evaluator.
