In July 1776, independence from Great Britain was proclaimed, and twelve years later, New York became the eleventh state with the capital Kingston, which in 1797 ceded this honor to Albany. The state of New York stood on the side of the North, slavery ended there in 1827. Residents actively assisted the fugitives from the slave-owning South, sending them to a free Canada.
