Chronicle of the salvation of a decaying marriage
In the center of the narrative of the picture, the main character is captain of the fire brigade Caleb Holt (Kirk Cameron). He is a brave and courageous man who never leaves his comrades in trouble. Every day he has to challenge fate, risk himself, saving unfortunate fire victims from a raging flame. Coming home, Caleb does not find comfort and support. The feelings between him and his wife Katherine (Erin Betia) have long faded. Only the love of God can help restore the former warmth in relations between the heroes. But the path to faith is not easy.
Criticism
In the reviews, the description of the film “Refractory” is not full of laudatory, extolling epithets. Film critics recognized the film as frankly weak: moralizing is literal, the images are traditionally stereotyped, the characteristics of the characters are inexpressive, actions and actions are very predictable.
At the same time, at the box office, Alex Kendrick's project paid off with interest. With a production budget of $ 500,000, box office exceeded 33.5 million. “Fireproof” is rightfully considered the most successful Christian independent film project. If we take into account that the premiere of the picture was not accompanied by a loud advertising campaign, then its success can be recognized as unique.
Spectator reviews of the film “Refractory” are less categorical than the opinions of professionals. The dissatisfaction of individual reviewers was caused by the pronounced and uncompromising Christian position of the filmmakers, who call everything by their proper names: love is love, but sin is sin.
The picture was awarded mass awards from evangelical organizations. Screening of the film in the program of the independent film festival of Christian films, held in San Antonio, brought the project Best Feature Film Award.
