In Orthodoxy, a spiritual mentor is a parish priest, bishop, or patriarch. Christians call such people simply confessors. What does he teach believers? The confessor in a regular Orthodox church accepts confession from parishioners, gives spiritual advice, blesses for some work, or, conversely, warns. The priest has a strong responsibility for mentoring. In monasteries, there are also necessarily confessors in the person of priests and schema-elders (high level of monasticism). Simply put, “ordinary” Christians learn from the wise, taught by life experience and prayer. It is the confessor who can sincerely pray to God for his flock and help in life.
Educators and teachers for children
In kindergartens and nurseries, teachers are engaged in kids. Everyone knows that this is either a strict or kind woman. In the morning the whole group is engaged, teaches the days of the week, colors and so on. And after lunch, classes begin on craftsmanship, needlework.
Can you call a mentor a tutor? Most likely no. If only this person from a pure heart wants to protect children from life mistakes. But a mentor is not just a responsible person, he will teach each individually individually. Important issues are resolved purely individually.
The same can be said about school teachers and teachers in universities and colleges. Their task in the first place is to convey their subject to the student, set out correctly, then test their knowledge. But in the case of preparation for the Olympics, serious competitions, teachers can be called a mentor.
How to become a mentor?
To become a mentor in the workplace, no talent is needed. They can even become an ordinary worker. The main thing is to show the technical process, documentation and give advice on how to distribute the working day. Serious mentoring may be where the trainee needs to be trained in complex work. It is important to explain everything, to show. For example, an experienced electric train driver must teach his student everything so that he not only understands theory but also practice. In this case, the fate of people depends on mentoring and apprenticeship. To believe that it is the teacher who is the mentor is not entirely correct. The teacher studied his profession in a specialized educational institution, and just an experienced person becomes a mentor.
Do I need talent?
Speaking from a spiritual point of view, the talent of mentoring is required. When a person does not have a good heart, he does not need to be someone a “guiding star”. Mentor is an assistant, friend, adviser.
Jesus Christ and the apostles guided people to the true path. They were not only teachers, but also mentors. So that people can live life with dignity, truly happy and achieve eternal joy, they need someone who will teach the correct behavior. From here, mentoring in Christianity arose.
We can say that the coach-mentor also, in a sense, helps spiritually to strengthen athletes. A healthy mind and strong will help to achieve unprecedented heights.
Any person who sincerely wants to help, give useful advice, console in trouble, teach kindness and mercy is a mentor, educator.
