Rauchfus Hospital

History of development

The highest permission of the Emperor to form the Prince Oldenburg Children's Hospital was published on September 30, 1864, on the 25th anniversary of the public service of His Imperial Highness at the Mariinsky Office. The laying of the clinic began exactly 3 years later - on September 30, 1867, and its lighting and opening on the same day in 1869. The Prince Oldenburgsky Children's Clinic was built taking into account all the scientific discoveries and achievements of that time. The principle of operation and equipment of the institution was significantly superior to the structure of all existing hospitals of this profile in Russia and Europe. The erection was carried out on charitable funds from the Office of the Empress Maria, as well as on personal transfers of the Prince of Oldenburg. The development of an effective device program belongs to a talented children's doctor - Karl Andreevich Rauchfus. The development plan was prepared by the academician of architecture Caesar Albertovich Kavos. In 1876, at the international exhibition held in Brussels, the Mariinsky Department was awarded an Honorary Diploma for recognizing the hospital as an exemplary indicator of a medical institution. In 1878, the Paris World Exhibition was held. The Prince Oldenburg Hospital was awarded the Big Gold Medal as the best children's clinic. In January 1919, the institution was renamed, he was given the name of the developer - K. A. Rauchfus. The hospital began to develop rapidly. To provide medical services to the largest number of patients, new departments began to open in 1925, and the number of beds increased. Already in the first year there were 425 of them, and after 15 years - 660. During this time, the Rauchfus Children's Hospital has expanded significantly. Specialized departments have opened. Some of them had no analogues in all of Russia. This, for example, an ENT department, a physiotherapy and neurology room.

War time

With the onset of World War II on the further development of the hospital. K. A. Rauchfus was out of the question. In 1941, 163 employees of the institution were mobilized into the ranks of the Red Army. During the war years, the clinic worked as a hospital for injured children. This included patients who were burned, wounded, and suffering from alimentary dystrophy. The hospital staff was forced to work in very difficult conditions. Depleted by hunger, employees carried water from the river in a sleigh, to disassemble the old houses, they had to put out high-explosive bombs on the roofs during the raids. People were dying of exhaustion right at their posts. In the period 1941-1942. from illnesses and hunger 63 employees of children's hospital died. But, despite all the hardships and horrors of the war, in 1942, for the little patients, they still arranged a New Year's holiday and put Christmas trees in their wards.

Post-war time

With the end of the war, the Rauchfus Hospital received a new impetus in development. Between 1945 and 2007, new branches were opened, many of them for the first time in St. Petersburg. Among them:
