Public safety has always been a matter of paramount importance to government officials. However, in past centuries, when the monarchy reigned, the security of the state and the emperor came first. It was for these purposes that a structure such as the gendarmerie was created. It was obviously necessary.
So what is it? What system does it represent? The gendarmerie is the police, but not in the sense in which it exists now. In past centuries, it had a military organization, which is rightly considered a distinctive and important feature. The gendarmerie police were engaged in the protection of society both within the country, and so it was with the army, which at that time was of great value.
A bit of history
In 1791, the gendarmerie was first created, this formation was an innovation in France. In the initial version, it concerned both the military ministries and the Ministry of Justice, in addition, it was divided into parts, that is, legions and units, which were called companies. A similar example of the gendarmerie existed in other European countries, for example, in Austria, but reached the Russian Empire in a different version.
Initially, the gendarmerie in Russia existed and played the role of a military police. She was subordinate to the heir, but in this format did not last long. At the beginning of the nineteenth century, units began to appear in the police that controlled the army from the inside. In addition, the gendarmerie in the final version fought very stubbornly against the uprisings that the revolutionaries organized, ensuring public order.
Activities of members of the gendarmerie
One of the most striking examples of the development of state organs is the gendarmerie. This formation has always attracted the attention of historians, since each country presented its variants of this structure, while retaining only common features inherent in all similar entities.
So what is the essence of the gendarmerie? If we draw analogies, we can clearly see the similarities with the existing law enforcement agencies when considering the main areas of activity. It can be both Investigative Committees and ATS. In fact, the powers were unchanged in the past and at present, with the exception of some adjustments.
The main areas of work of the gendarmes were the implementation of investigation and investigation. The only caveat is that their activities were aimed only at those crimes that affected the interests of the state, even threatened it. That is why, most often, the gendarmerie threw all its forces into the struggle against uprisings and discontent of citizens.
